It's been a while since Catherine Zeta-Jones held a central role on our screens, both big and small, and that's a bit of a shame. While her supporting role as Morticia Addams in Wednesday (whose importance is set to grow in Season 2) was notable, the actress hasn't had many truly standout performances in recent years.

Over the past decade, she has appeared in several series, most of which remained relatively niche outside of their original markets. These include Queen America on Facebook Watch (yes, really), Prodigal Son for Fox, and even the Disney+ National Treasure spin-off, National Treasure: Edge of History. This time, Catherine Zeta-Jones returns to the small screen on HBO Max in a gangster series that feels like a British, humor-infused John Wick. The trailer is out, and it promises an intense adventure.

Kill Jackie is adapted from Nick Harkaway's novel, Go F** Yourselves*. With a slight twist, the original work's Jack Price has become Jackie, the heroine who gives the series its title. The character portrayed by Catherine Zeta-Jones is a former cocaine trafficker who has reinvented herself as an art dealer.

Kill Jackie is co-created by Tom Butterworth (Gangs of London), Damon Thomas (Killing Eve), and Peter Lawson, a producer known for John Wick. Butterworth also serves as the showrunner. Naturally, revenge is in the air: the "Seven Demons," a group of psychopathic killers, have been hired to eliminate Jackie, who evidently angered the wrong person in her previous life. It might sound like a classic premise, but the series' tone is intriguing, and Catherine Zeta-Jones' undeniable Welsh accent adds a distinct charm.

The variety of settings and cities suggests that Jackie will be fleeing her pursuers across the globe, all while attempting to uncover who hired them. She's surrounded by colorful characters and a strong supporting cast, including the formidable Daniel Ings (Lyonel Baratheon in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms) and Darci Shaw (The Irregulars, A Thousand Blows) as her two sidekicks. The brilliant Ron Perlman (Hellboy, Pacific Rim) also appears, though his role seems more discreet, perhaps even as the antagonist.

The rest of the trailer showcases what appears to be a classic action-comedy: big guns, absurd situations, bloody action sequences, and increasingly elaborate traps. Observant viewers might even spot a reference to 28 Days Later: Jackie crosses a deserted Westminster Bridge in a blue gown, much like Cillian Murphy in Danny Boyle's film.

Kill Jackie is set to premiere on October 2 in the United States on AMC+, before arriving on HBO Max in France later in the year, with no precise date communicated yet. Similarly, The Gallerist, a film starring Catherine Zeta-Jones alongside Natalie Portman, Jenna Ortega, and Charli XCX, and directed by Cathy Yan (Birds of Prey), will be released on December 4 in the US, but currently has no announced French release date.
