Anticipation has been building for Les Nouvelles Mésaventures de Cliff Booth, the follow-up to Quentin Tarantino's acclaimed 2019 film. Now, in a cross-interview with Empire magazine, both Tarantino, who penned the script, and director David Fincher have shed light on the creative direction of the project, assuring fans it will be anything but a retread.
Tarantino emphasized the distinct narrative ambition for this new chapter starring Brad Pitt's iconic stuntman. "I don't consider this film at all a work focused on simply strolling with the characters," he stated, drawing a clear contrast to Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood, which, despite its meandering feel, had a definitive destination in the Cielo Drive murders. "This script is very different."
Instead of a character-driven amble, Tarantino likened the sequel's essence to a specific genre. "To me, it evokes the flavor of an Elmore Leonard detective novel: we find that atmosphere typical of pocket thrillers," he explained. This comparison immediately brings to mind Tarantino's 1997 film Jackie Brown, an adaptation of Leonard's novel Rum Punch, signaling a return to a more plot-driven, noir-inflected storytelling.
David Fincher, known for his meticulous and often darker cinematic style, shared his enthusiasm for the project, particularly its initial premise. "I liked the idea that it was a campfire story," Fincher commented, noting that the plot's intricacies were secondary to the interactions of characters navigating 1977 Hollywood's underbelly. He also revealed the original script's epic scale: "The first version I read was 230 pages. It was, in essence, two films in one."
Fincher, along with star Brad Pitt, played a pivotal role in shaping the final version of the script. The director disclosed that he condensed the extensive screenplay by 60 pages, aiming for a more focused 2-hour and 20-minute runtime. This reduction, he noted, was a collaborative effort, a "convergence" of intentions between himself, Tarantino, and Pitt, indicating a shared vision for the film's core focus.
The collaboration between two of Hollywood's most distinctive auteurs, with Brad Pitt returning to a beloved role, has generated considerable excitement. While specific plot details remain under wraps, the promise of a more structured, detective-style narrative infused with the unique sensibilities of both Tarantino and Fincher suggests a compelling evolution for Cliff Booth's story.
Les Nouvelles Mésaventures de Cliff Booth is slated for a Netflix release in France on December 23, 2026. American audiences will reportedly get an early look, with the film debuting in IMAX cinemas on November 24, 2026.
