Music enthusiasts and film fans in the U.K. will soon have the chance to delve into the story of Wong Ka Kui, the influential singer-songwriter whose work with Beyond captivated a generation of Cantonese-speaking audiences across Asia. The documentary, directed by Rosa Pang, offers an intimate look at Wong's journey, from his early musical explorations to his rise as a cultural icon, before his untimely death in 1993 at the age of 31.
'Because of You Ka Kui' is built upon a rich tapestry of interviews with individuals who knew Wong personally and professionally, complemented by rare concert footage and previously unreleased archive material. Producers for the film include Yip Sai Wing, a founding member of Beyond, and Leslie Chan, the manager credited with discovering the band. The filmmakers aim to present a comprehensive portrait, rediscovering "the real Wong Ka Kui" through the memories of those closest to him, as described by Pang and Leslie Chan.
The U.K.-China Film Collab, an NGO, spearheaded the distribution deal following discussions at Hong Kong's FilMart in March. This strategic move mirrors their successful approach with Robin Lee’s ‘Four Trails’ last year, which also opened the Odyssey Festival before a wider theatrical release. The film's U.K. premiere will kick off the Odyssey Film Festival, running from September 28 to October 10 across various cinemas and online platforms.
Interestingly, the documentary features a direct U.K. connection, with an interview with Beyond founding member William Tang filmed in London. The festival's choice of 'Because of You Ka Kui' as its opener is particularly poignant given this year's theme: #Fashion. Hiu Man Chan, Odyssey’s artistic director and founder of U.K.-China Film Collab, highlighted Beyond's role in shaping rather than just following trends. "Beyond did not simply follow the fashion of their generation, in many ways, they helped create it, like Oasis for the U.K.," Chan stated, emphasizing how the band's music, image, and attitude became a defining part of Hong Kong's cultural memory.
Chan further explained that the selection broadens the festival's interpretation of fashion beyond mere clothing to encompass how film, music, visual identity, and pop culture intertwine. The film, which previously had a theatrical run in Asia, was launched internationally at FilMart by Malaysian company Abnormal Studios, serving as the flagship title for their new international sales arm.
Pang underscored the film's contemporary relevance, stating, "‘Because of You Ka Kui’ is not about nostalgia. The honesty of Wong Ka Kui as a person – in what he thought, felt and believed – continues to resonate today." Leslie Chan echoed this sentiment, adding that after hearing all the interviews, he "really felt that I came to know Ka Kui all over again."
With support from the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in London for its opening and part of its program, the Odyssey Film Festival's sixth edition promises a compelling exploration of culture, music, and identity, anchored by this powerful tribute to a musical legend.
