Just a few years ago, Destin Daniel Cretton was known for modest independent dramas, far from the mainstream spotlight. However, after proving his blockbuster chops with Marvel's Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (grossing $432 million worldwide against a $150-200 million budget) and especially shattering box office records with Spider-Man: Brand New Day (which boasts an impressive $2.4 billion globally as of this writing), he is quickly becoming one of Hollywood's most sought-after directors.

Now fielding offers from all corners, Cretton has already been recruited to helm the ambitious live-action film adaptation of Naruto, with Charles Melton reportedly cast as Kakashi Hatake, Naruto's mentor. And the projects continue to stack up for Cretton, as he has now been appointed to direct a feature film based on one of television's most emblematic police series.

While Awaiting Spider-Man 5…

According to exclusive revelations from Deadline, Destin Daniel Cretton will take the reins of the cinematic adaptation of Hawaii Five-0 for Paramount Pictures. This marks a significant development for the legendary American television fixture, which followed the investigations of Commander Steve McGarrett, stoically portrayed by the late Jack Lord. The original series dominated CBS audiences between 1968 and 1980, spanning twelve seasons.

To pilot this long-form reimagining, the studio has entrusted the script to Chris Bremner, known for his work on Bad Boys for Life and Bad Boys: Ride or Die (which may not inspire universal confidence), and Noah Oppenheim, writer of the political drama Jackie and, notably, the brilliant A House of Dynamite (which offers significantly more reassurance).

It's worth recalling that this isn't the first revival of the brand; television already saw a successful remake, Hawaii 5-0, led by the duo Alex O’Loughlin (Steve McGarrett) and Scott Caan (Danny Williams). This version managed to run for 10 seasons between 2010 and 2020 and notably featured Mark Dacascos as Steve McGarrett's infamous nemesis, the formidable Wo Fat.

For now, no cast members have been announced for this live-action film, and Paramount has not yet provided a release window. Between the development of his Naruto blockbuster and the inevitable calls from Sony to return for more Spider-Man adventures, Destin Daniel Cretton's schedule is undoubtedly packed. We can therefore assume that the Hawaii Five-0 film will not arrive for quite some time.
