AMC and French broadcaster Canal+ have officially greenlit an eight-part television series based on the classic 1991 film Point Break. This announcement follows a December report by Deadline revealing that the network behind Breaking Bad was developing the project.
Set over three decades after the events of the original movie, the series will introduce a new heist crew with direct ties to the infamous Ex-Presidents gang. The FBI, in turn, will be forced to enlist a mysterious ex-pro surfer with a troubled past to infiltrate the group.
For U.S. audiences, the series will air on AMC and its streaming counterpart, AMC+. Canal+ will broadcast the show in France and distribute it via its pay service across Europe, Africa, and Asia. Studiocanal, a sister distribution division of Canal+, will handle global distribution.
Alcon Television Group, the TV arm of the company responsible for the 2015 Point Break film reboot, is producing the series. Dave Kalstein, known for his work on Butterfly, Treadstone, and NCIS: Los Angeles, will serve as co-showrunner alongside Christopher C. Rogers, an executive producer on Sugar and Halt and Catch Fire.
Production for the eight-part series is slated to begin early next year.
The original Point Break, directed by Kathryn Bigelow and written by W. Peter Iliff, starred Keanu Reeves as rookie FBI agent Johnny Utah, who infiltrates a gang of bank-robbing Southern California surfers known as the Ex-Presidents. Led by Patrick Swayze's charismatic Bodhi, the gang wore masks of former U.S. presidents, and Utah soon found himself drawn into their adrenaline-fueled lifestyle, culminating in a dramatic showdown amid perilous waves.
Kalstein and Rogers will also executive produce the series, joined by Alcon co-founders and co-CEOs Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson, Alcon Television Group head of television Ben Roberts, and Julia Cohen. Studiocanal's M-K Kennedy, Paul Gilbert, and Daniel Gratton are also on board as executive producers. Steven Johnson, Diego Piasek, and Gene Hong will serve as co-executive producers, with Emily Yoshida and Ben Cook as supervising producers.
Dan McDermott, chief content officer of AMC Global Media and president of AMC Studios, expressed his enthusiasm: “Start with one of the most entertaining and unforgettable action films ever made, add a powerhouse creative team and producing partners, massive fan interest that has been clear from the moment we announced the series was in development and you get a greenlight we could not be more excited about.” McDermott praised Kalstein and Rogers for creating a story and characters that honor the film's legacy while introducing a new generation of Ex-Presidents.
Kalstein and Rogers shared their personal connection to the original: “*Point Break* was the movie that rocked our worlds forever. It was this wild cinematic sermon on friendship, outlaws, and spirituality that struck our souls. As we got older, we realized it hit millions of people the same way. Point Break is more than just a movie—it’s a way of looking at the world. We are so honored to be carrying this legacy forward with Alcon, AMC, and Studiocanal. We’re putting together a series that will inspire audiences everywhere to seek The Ultimate.”
