The highly anticipated horror series Ascension, helmed by multiple Oscar-winning filmmaker Alfonso Cuarón, has added a distinguished name to its ensemble: Bill Nighy. As reported by Variety and highlighted by Ecranlarge, Nighy's involvement marks a significant addition to the Apple TV+ project, which is shaping up to be a compelling offering in the streaming landscape.

Ascension is an adaptation of Adam Nevill's critically acclaimed horror novel, Last Days (published in French as Derniers jours). Cuarón, known for his masterful work on films like Children of Men, Gravity, and Roma, is serving as an executive producer and co-writer on the series. This project reunites him with Apple TV+ following his psychological thriller series Disclaimer, which premiered in 2024.

Nighy, an actor celebrated for his versatile performances across genres, from his BAFTA-nominated role in Love Actually to his iconic turn as Davy Jones in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, is a welcome presence. His recent work includes an Oscar nomination for Best Actor in Living, and prior television appearances in projects like Amazon's Lazarus and Showtime's The Man Who Fell to Earth. His addition to Ascension will undoubtedly bring a unique gravitas to the horror narrative.

Leading the series is Caitríona Balfe, best known for her role as Claire Fraser in the hit historical drama Outlander. Balfe's casting was announced last August, setting the stage for a strong central performance. The series will follow her character, Rose, a relentless documentarian and newly divorced mother. Rose is exceptionally adept at uncovering truths about others but struggles to confront her own. Her journey takes an unexpected turn when she embarks on a new project investigating a mysterious 20th-century cult known as the Church of Ascension. What begins as a refuge soon reveals a far more insidious reality lurking beneath its teachings.

Much of Ascension's directorial duties will be handled by Natalie Erika James, who also serves as a co-writer and executive producer. James is recognized for her work on the acclaimed horror film Relic and Apartment 7A. She joins Cuarón, his brother Carlos Cuarón (Y tu mamá también), and Christian White (Apartment 7A) on the executive producing and writing team.

The combination of Cuarón's visionary storytelling, a gripping source novel, and a talented cast led by Balfe and now Nighy, positions Ascension as a must-watch for horror aficionados. While anticipation builds, Apple TV+ has yet to announce a release date for the series.
