Paramount+ has officially greenlit Mushroom Murders, a gripping true crime limited series that will bring one of Australia's most sensational recent cases to the screen. Melanie Lynskey, known for her acclaimed roles in Yellowjackets and The Last Of Us, will take on the lead role of Erin Patterson, the woman accused and convicted in the 2023 Leongatha mushroom murders.

The series is based on actual events where Patterson served a lunch at her Victoria home, including beef wellingtons allegedly prepared with highly toxic death cap mushrooms. This tragic meal led to the deaths of three guests, including her estranged in-laws. Mushroom Murders will meticulously cover the 97 days following the fateful lunch, leading up to Patterson's subsequent arrest. The real-life case gained national attention, with Patterson's 2025 sentencing, currently under appeal for a 33-year prison term, even broadcast live.

Created by Anya Beyersdorf (Fake), who also serves as a writer and executive producer, the series brings together a strong creative team. Daina Reid (The Handmaid’s Tale) is attached to direct all six episodes and will also executive produce. Deb Balderstone, Xavier Marchand, and Sophia Mogford are also on board as executive producers, with Dianne Taylor and Belinda Chayko joining Beyersdorf in the writing room. Soapbox Pictures is producing the series.

The commissioning of Mushroom Murders underscores Paramount+'s continued investment in Australian original content, a market where the streaming service has seen significant success with breakout hits like the comedy Colin From Accounts and NCIS: Sydney. Beverley McGarvey, President Network 10 and Head of Streaming, Paramount Australia, emphasized the project's importance:

"This is an ambitious series that brings a gripping real-life story, that captivated Australia and the world, to the screen with the scale, quality and creative vision audiences expect from Paramount+."

Lynskey's involvement, fresh off her recent Netflix film Don’t Say Good Luck, is expected to draw significant international attention to the true crime drama, further solidifying Paramount+'s growing slate of premium global storytelling.
