Oscar-nominated actor Delroy Lindo has stepped behind the camera for the first time, directing 'Jabari's People,' a poignant family drama that recently wrapped its 22-day shoot in Jamaica. The film, a passion project for Lindo, brings together a compelling cast to tell a story rooted in themes of grief, identity, and inheritance.

The narrative of 'Jabari's People' unfolds between the vibrant streets of Brooklyn and the serene Blue Mountains of Jamaica. It centers on Jabari, a talented yet rebellious Brooklyn teenager, who is sent to live with his estranged grandparents following the sudden death of his mother. What begins as a reluctant exile transforms into an unforeseen journey of self-discovery, forcing Jabari and three generations of his family to confront long-unspoken wounds and reckon with their shared history.

Seyi Andes-Pelumi takes on the titular role of Jabari, portraying the defiant teen. Winston Duke, known for his powerful performances as M'Baku in the 'Black Panther' franchise, stars as Jabari's overwhelmed father. Marianne Jean-Baptiste, an Academy Award nominee for 'Secrets & Lies,' plays the emotionally intuitive grandmother, while Lindo himself embodies the disciplined grandfather. Wendell Pierce, celebrated for his work on 'The Wire' and a Tony-nominated stage career, rounds out the main cast as a family doctor in New York.

For Lindo, 'Jabari's People' represents a culmination of years of dedication. The story first came to his attention in 2015 as a potential acting role, but when the rights became available in 2021, he knew he had to direct it. "From the time I got the rights, I knew I was going to direct this," Lindo shared with The Hollywood Reporter, adding that the story "touched me in my soul as a person of Jamaican extraction." He expressed hopes that the film will serve as a homage to Jamaica, showcasing aspects of the island, including its spiritual side, that are less commonly depicted on screen.

Lindo also spoke about the unique challenges and joys of directing, especially while acting in the film himself. He found himself having to adapt from his usual private preparation as an actor to a more collaborative, open approach as a director. "I’ve had to open myself up and be more available," he noted, describing the adjustment as elementary yet significant. He cited moments on set where actors brought his written words to life, making him feel, "Oh, it’s really happening."

'Jabari's People' is produced by Lindo through his Mudtop Productions banner, alongside Robert A. Maylor, Lena Cordina, and Natalie Thompson. Susan Rockefeller, Regina K. Scully, and Melony Lewis serve as executive producers, with IAG handling distribution rights. The film promises to be a deeply personal and culturally rich cinematic experience from a beloved actor making his anticipated debut behind the lens.
