Jason Blum directly addressed the online discussion surrounding the title of their recent box office success, 'Other Mommy.' Despite its strong performance, the film's naming choice, particularly the use of 'Mommy' instead of 'Mother,' drew considerable comment. Blum revealed that the decision was a point of contention even within the production company. "Well, funnily enough, my partner James Wan wanted to call it ‘Other Mother,’ and he got outvoted," Blum confessed, adding with a touch of humor, "This is probably why we should always listen to James Wan."
In a highly anticipated casting announcement, Kristen Bell is set to join David Harbour in 'Violent Night 2,' taking on the role of a 'badass' Mrs. Claus. Bell shared her initial surprise at the invitation. "David called and said, ‘I need you to come to Winnipeg.’ And I was like, ‘What? No,’” she recounted. However, the allure of the character quickly won her over. Bell explained that Harbour pitched Mrs. Claus as someone who is "every bit as capable as Santa is.' And I said, ‘Say more.’" The actress, a self-professed fan of the first film, was swiftly on board.
The presentation also confirmed several high-profile franchise expansions. A new installment of 'The Exorcist' is in the works, with Scarlett Johansson attached. The beloved 'Paranormal Activity' franchise is getting a modern makeover, with a new film slated for a May 21 release. Blum highlighted the personal significance of 'Paranormal Activity,' noting it "really gave birth to everything that we’ve done" at Blumhouse. Director Ian Tuason is helming the project, with a teaser video indicating production is underway.
Fans can also anticipate a revamped 'The Blair Witch Project,' with director Dylan Clark taking the reins. James Wan expressed enthusiasm for Clark, praising him as a filmmaker who grew up with and has great reverence for the original. Furthermore, 'Saw 11' is back on track following the Blumhouse-Atomic Monster merger, with Mike P. Nelson directing. Blum confirmed that James Wan and Leigh Whannell are creatively involved, ensuring a fresh take while honoring the franchise's legacy.
Beyond established properties, Blumhouse is diving into new adaptations. Craig Zobel is set to direct the live-action film adaptation of James Tynion IV and Werther Dell’Edera’s acclaimed comic book series, 'Something Is Killing the Children,' which is also being developed as an adult animated television series. Other projects include a MatPat-led film adaptation of the indie video game 'Amanda the Adventurer' and Oscar nominee LaKeith Stanfield’s next movie, 'Molepeople.' The company also announced a new short-film deal with Heidi Wong and revealed that their horror game, 'Grave Seasons,' will officially launch on March 9.
