Popcorn Wire has learned from Variety that Woody Allen's eagerly anticipated new feature, a contemporary comedy, is set to commence principal photography in Madrid on October 5. The project has assembled a notable international cast, including Marton Csokas, recognized for his roles in "The Lord of the Rings" and "The Equalizer," and Jemima Kirke, known to audiences from "Girls" and "Sex Education." They are joined by a talented ensemble featuring Jakob Oftebro ("Hamilton," "Kon-Tiki"), Peter Vives ("The Time in Between," "Velvet"), and Alexi Wasser ("Messy," "Girls").
Allen, who also penned the screenplay, will direct this as-yet-untitled film. The choice of Madrid as the primary filming location holds particular significance, marking Allen's third production in Spain, following the critically acclaimed "Vicky Cristina Barcelona" (2008) and "Rifkin’s Festival" (2020). The entire production will be shot in English, reinforcing its international appeal. Commenting on his return, Allen shared with Variety, "I will be very happy to return to Spain... my first opportunity to make a film in Madrid, a city I have always loved."
The production is a collaborative effort, with Madrid-based Wanda Vision, Allen’s own Gravier Productions, and 3SIX9 Studios serving as producers. A seasoned creative team is also on board, including acclaimed cinematographer José Luis Alcaine, celebrated costume designer Sonia Grande, and production designer Alain Bainée, all contributing their expertise to shape the film's aesthetic.
Crucially for its global reach, WestEnd Films has boarded world sales for the feature. This move solidifies a long-standing partnership between WestEnd and Gravier Productions, demonstrating continued confidence in Allen's work. WestEnd notably handled international sales for Allen's recent drama, "Coup de Chance," which premiered at the Venice Film Festival and successfully secured distribution in over 30 countries. Beyond new projects, WestEnd also proudly represents a comprehensive library of 25 Allen titles, including beloved films such as "Midnight in Paris," "Match Point," and "Blue Jasmine." Maya Amsellem, Managing Director of WestEnd Films, expressed her enthusiasm for the collaboration, telling Variety, "We’re thrilled to bring his new film to market." She highlighted that the film "brings together an exciting international ensemble cast in Madrid," setting the stage for its introduction to international buyers at the upcoming American Film Market (AFM).
This new venture underscores Woody Allen's enduring commitment to filmmaking, bringing his distinctive voice and comedic sensibilities to a fresh international setting with a compelling new cast.
