The path to The Matrix 5 appears less clear than previously thought, despite Warner Bros.' evident enthusiasm for another installment. In a recent interview on KCRW's The Business, co-creator Lilly Wachowski revealed a significant development regarding the planned sequel.
While acknowledging Warner Bros.' consistent desire to expand the franchise, Wachowski stated her personal disinterest in returning to the 'sandbox.' "*Warner Bros.—they want to make another [movie]. They're always going to want to make another thing,*". However, the situation is complicated by the involvement of Oscar-nominated writer and director Drew Goddard, known for The Martian and The Cabin in the Woods.
"*But there's this maybe-a-thing that's happening with Drew Goddard, and he doesn't want to go forward unless he gets our blessing. And so it becomes this complicated situation—that maybe we're going to stick our noses in a tiny bit and see how we feel,*". This suggests that Goddard, who is attached to direct and write the screenplay for The Matrix 5, is prioritizing the original creators' approval before proceeding.
Wachowski concluded, "*And if we want to pass on our blessing to Drew or not. So could be something that's coming down the road, but it's still unknown.*" This stands in contrast to Goddard's earlier, more optimistic update to ScreenRant, where he simply mentioned being in his "writing cave" with news to share upon emerging.
The last installment, The Matrix Resurrections, released in 2021, faced a challenging box office performance attributed to its hybrid theatrical-streaming release during the pandemic. Despite mixed reviews (currently at 63% on Rotten Tomatoes from both critics and audiences) and a story that left threads open for continuation, The Matrix 5 was announced in 2024. While original stars like Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss, and Jada Pinkett Smith featured in Resurrections alongside newcomers, Keanu Reeves' return for The Matrix 5 remains unconfirmed.
Should the Wachowski siblings withhold their blessing, it's plausible that Drew Goddard might depart the project.
