For the first time, Disney is extending its popular 'Funday Football' animated altcast format to the Super Bowl, according to a report from The Hollywood Reporter. Set for Super Bowl LXI, which will take place in 2027 at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California, this special broadcast will transport viewers to a galaxy far, far away.
The alternate telecast will feature animated avatars of real-life NFL players, with beloved 'Star Wars' characters making appearances during key plays. Adding an authentic touch, veteran actor Anthony Daniels will reprise his role, lending his voice to the iconic droid C-3PO. Other fan-favorite characters from the vast 'Star Wars' franchise are also slated to appear, further immersing viewers in the thematic experience.
This initiative builds on Disney's prior success with animated altcasts for regular-season NFL games, which have previously featured characters from beloved properties like Toy Story, The Simpsons, and Monsters Inc. However, bringing this concept to the Super Bowl marks a significant step, elevating the animated presentation to the year's most-watched single broadcast event. The cutting-edge data visualization technology powering this animated spectacle is provided by Sony's Beyond Sports.
The 'Star Wars' altcast will be widely accessible, streaming live on Disney+ and the ESPN app. It will also air on linear television channels Disney Channel and Disney XD. This ensures a broad reach, complementing the main Super Bowl LXI broadcast, which will be available on ABC, ESPN, and Disney+.
Beyond the Super Bowl, Disney is committed to integrating 'Star Wars' into its regular NFL coverage. Starting soon, the streaming version of SportsCenter, known as SC+ on Disney+, will incorporate 'Star Wars' visual themes into its Monday Night Football highlights. Furthermore, beginning with the October 26 MNF game, SC+ will feature an animated Darth Vader interviewing a player from that week's contest, offering a lighthearted and creative crossover.
The 'Funday Football' altcast will be available live in numerous international territories, including the United States, Latin America, the Caribbean, Australia, New Zealand, Canada (via TSN+), the Netherlands, sub-Saharan Africa, Japan, Sweden, Singapore, Malaysia, and the Philippines. Other regions will have access to the broadcast shortly after the game concludes, ensuring a global reach for this unique fusion of sports and science fiction.
