Fans of the Star Trek universe have a new date to mark on their calendars, as 'Star Trek: Starfleet Academy' will return for its sophomore and concluding season in March 2027. The news broke at the recent New York Comic Con, during a panel that included series star Holly Hunter, alongside fellow cast members Sandro Rosta, Bella Shepard, Karim Diané, and Robert Picardo. Co-showrunners and executive producers Alex Kurtzman and Noga Landau were also present to share the exciting updates.
A significant reveal from the panel was the addition of two distinguished guest stars: Bill Nighy and Rosemarie DeWitt. Nighy, known for his roles in films like Living and About Time, will portray Nyk Ake, the estranged father of cadet Nahla. DeWitt, who has impressed audiences in Untamed and The Staircase, is cast as Laytha Sadal, the mother of cadet Tarima and the First Lady of Betazed. Their involvement promises to bring additional depth and intrigue to the narrative as the cadets face new challenges.
Produced by CBS Studios in collaboration with Alex Kurtzman’s Secret Hideout and Roddenberry Entertainment, 'Star Trek: Starfleet Academy' follows a fresh class of Starfleet cadets as they navigate the rigorous demands of Starfleet training. The series explores their coming-of-age stories, marked by burgeoning friendships, intense rivalries, first loves, and encounters with a formidable new enemy threatening both the Academy and the larger Federation.
The second season will see the cadets advance to their second year aboard the USS Athena, where their core ideals of leadership, camaraderie, romance, and morality will be rigorously tested. The upcoming season is slated to feature budding rivalries, delicate diplomatic negotiations, a fierce school-wide tournament, and the arrival of a mysterious new cadet. This new character's presence is expected to raise questions with far-reaching consequences beyond the classroom, setting the stage for a dramatic conclusion to the series.
Several first-look images from Season 2 were also released, providing a sneak peek at the evolving dynamics and new faces within the Academy.
