The Enterprise crew has certainly faced its share of unique challenges in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, from noir-infused Klingons to sentient puppets. However, star Ethan Peck, who embodies the iconic Vulcan-human hybrid Spock, recently shared an intriguing concept for an episode that would have taken the character into much darker territory.

During a panel at Tampa Bay Comic Con, moderated by Collider's Maggie Lovitt and featuring co-star Christina Chong, Peck discussed his pitch for a scrapped episode. "I thought it would have been so cool if someone from Spock's past came back, and expected a favor returned," Peck explained. "I understand it to be called a blood debt. Someone has done something for you, and they come from your past, and they want their debt paid...and it was something sort of unethical, or in the ineffable grey, which I thought could have been a cool episode. You know, maybe someday."

This concept would have offered a deep dive into Spock's internal conflict, a recurring theme for his character as he navigates his dual heritage. Throughout Strange New Worlds, Spock has faced transformations, forged new relationships with crewmates like Christine Chapel (Jess Bush) and La'an Noonien-Singh (Chong), and even encountered a young James Kirk (Paul Wesley), all while striving to balance his human emotions with Vulcan logic under Captain Christopher Pike's (Anson Mount) command.

While Peck's dark pitch remains unrealized for now, co-star Christina Chong did see one of her wishes come true with season 2's musical episode, "Subspace Rhapsody." Though she jokingly added that it still lacked her ideal vision of "dancing Gorn with top hats and canes and sequins."

Spock's Complex History

Spock's personal history has always captivated Star Trek fans, often hinted at in The Original Series before later expansions. Viewers eventually met his parents, Vulcan leader Sarek and human diplomat Amanda Grayson, and learned about his challenging childhood on Vulcan, where his mixed heritage made him an outsider. The 1974 Star Trek: The Animated Series episode "Yesteryear," penned by Original Series writer D.C. Fontana, provided significant insight into his early life and is considered a franchise classic. Later, Star Trek V: The Final Frontier introduced his previously unknown half-brother, Sybok, and Star Trek: Discovery revealed his adoptive human sister, Michael Burnham. An episode exploring an "unethical" blood debt would certainly align with the rich, often turbulent, tapestry of Spock's past.
