The upcoming miniseries, titled Star Trek: Crusher, will be published by IDW Comics and is slated for release next summer. It promises to bridge the narrative gap for Dr. Crusher between the events of Star Trek: Nemesis, which marked the final cinematic outing for the Next Generation crew, and her significant return in the third season of Star Trek: Picard. This previously unexplored era saw Crusher depart Starfleet and become estranged from her former colleagues, focusing on raising her son, Jack Crusher. The revelation of Jack's true paternity – as Jean-Luc Picard's son – was a major plot point in Picard, and this comic will delve into the complex, untold history of Beverly, Jean-Luc, and Jack during these formative and often tumultuous years.

McFadden, a long-standing presence in the Star Trek franchise since her 1987 debut as the Chief Medical Officer of the USS Enterprise-D in Star Trek: The Next Generation, expressed her enthusiasm for this new creative endeavor. "It's an honor to return to Starfleet and expand Beverly Crusher's storyline in a whole new way," she shared, as reported by Collider. She added that it was "inspiring and thrilling to now be the one scripting a new chapter in this fabulous character's saga." The series will feature art by Megan Levens, known for her intricate work on Star Trek and Buffy the Vampire Slayer comics for Dark Horse, with vibrant colors provided by Charlie Kirchoff, who notably contributed to the Hugo Award-winning graphic novel Star Trek: Lower Decks - Warp Your Own Way.

While McFadden is breaking new ground by helming an entire comic miniseries for her character, she joins a distinguished list of Star Trek actors who have ventured into writing about their on-screen personas. Notable figures such as Walter Koenig (Pavel Chekov), John de Lancie (Q), George Takei, and William Shatner have previously contributed to Star Trek comics or novels, enriching the expansive lore of the franchise. McFadden's direct involvement in shaping Dr. Crusher's destiny offers a unique and authentic voice to a character beloved by generations of fans. This new comic series is poised to offer compelling insights into the life and decisions of one of Starfleet's most respected medical officers, filling in crucial backstory and deepening the narrative tapestry of the Star Trek universe ahead of any potential future appearances.
