Paramount is moving forward with 'Smile 3,' enlisting David Bruckner to direct and Nick Antosca to pen the screenplay. While Parker Finn, who wrote and directed the first two highly successful 'Smile' films, will not be returning to direct, he remains deeply involved as a producer. Finn reportedly pitched the framework for the third movie, ensuring his creative vision continues to guide the franchise's direction.
Bruckner brings a strong horror pedigree to the 'Smile' universe. His previous directorial efforts include the critically acclaimed 2022 'Hellraiser' reboot, the unsettling psychological thriller 'The Ritual' (2017), and the atmospheric supernatural horror 'The Night House' (2020). Bruckner is currently a sought-after talent, with several other projects in development, including a reboot of the sci-fi horror classic 'The Blob' for Warner Bros., Universal's adaptation of 'The Caretaker' starring Sydney Sweeney, and 'Mice' for A24.
Joining Bruckner is screenwriter Nick Antosca, recognized for his work on television series such as Apple's 'Cape Fear' (which he created) and Hulu's 'The Act' (co-creator). His film writing credits include 2021's 'Antlers' and the recent Colleen Hoover adaptation 'Verity,' demonstrating his versatility across genre and medium.
Meanwhile, Parker Finn is embarking on a significant new project, taking the director's chair for a remake of Andrzej Żuławski's chilling 1981 supernatural thriller, 'Possession.' The remake, set to star Callum Turner and Margaret Qualley, has a release date slated for June 11, 2027. This move aligns with Finn's first-look deal with Paramount, which he secured after the original 'Smile' became a surprise theatrical hit, showcasing the studio's confidence in his talent.
The 'Smile' franchise has proven to be a consistent box office success for Paramount. The 2022 original film, initially destined for streaming, pivoted to a theatrical release and grossed an impressive $217 million globally against a modest budget. Its 2024 sequel, 'Smile 2,' continued the commercial momentum, earning $139 million worldwide on a $28 million budget. Cumulatively, the two films have garnered over $350 million globally. Each installment has functioned as a standalone sequel, featuring new characters and stories, which leaves the plot and cast details for 'Smile 3' entirely under wraps for now. Jonathan Fass will serve as executive producer for the upcoming film.
