Snook, celebrated for her Golden Globe and Emmy-winning portrayal of Shiv Roy in HBO’s "Succession," will step into the lead role of Myra Massey. The series promises a suspenseful blend of personal drama and supernatural terror, as Myra, embroiled in a contentious custody battle, returns to her childhood home with her young daughter. Her arrival coincides with a secret investigation into a friend's suspicious disappearance, only for her efforts to be overshadowed by a growing, inexplicable threat: deadly bird attacks that seem disturbingly linked to the unfolding mystery.
The ambitious adaptation is being developed with Tom Spezialy serving as the pilot writer and an executive producer. Spezialy brings a strong pedigree to HBO, having previously contributed to critically acclaimed series like "Watchmen" and "The Leftovers." He will be joined by a robust team of executive producers, including David Heyman and Danny Samit from Heyday Television, Jennifer Gabler Rawlings, and Snook herself, adding her creative input to the project. HBO is co-producing the series with Universal Global Television, tapping into the rights controlled by Universal Pictures and the du Maurier estate. The news was first reported by Deadline and later confirmed by Variety.
This new venture solidifies Snook's relationship with HBO following her highly successful four-season run on "Succession." It also keeps her connected to Universal, a studio she recently worked with on the Peacock series "All Her Fault," which also earned her an Emmy nomination. For David Heyman, this project runs concurrently with his executive producer role on HBO’s eagerly anticipated "Harry Potter" series, slated for a Christmas debut.
Daphne du Maurier's original short story first captivated readers in 1952, paving the way for Alfred Hitchcock’s cinematic masterpiece a decade later. Hitchcock’s "The Birds" redefined the horror genre, showcasing psychological tension and unsettling natural phenomena to create enduring scares. This HBO limited series aims to revisit that legacy, offering a fresh, character-driven exploration of the terrifying premise for a new generation of viewers, anchored by one of television's most compelling actresses.
