From Emmy-winning creator Brad Ingelsby, Task quickly garnered critical praise for its intense narrative and stellar performances, achieving a near-perfect 96% Certified Fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes and dominating HBO Max’s streaming charts. Originally conceived as a standalone limited series, its overwhelming success prompted HBO to greenlight a second season in November 2025, much to the delight of its dedicated audience.
The series, set against the backdrop of working-class Philadelphia, delves into the efforts of an FBI agent leading a task force to apprehend a family man orchestrating a string of violent robberies. Mark Ruffalo leads the cast as FBI agent Tom Brandis, with Martha Plimpton playing his boss, FBI Supervisory Senior Resident in Charge Kathleen McGinty.
While Ruffalo and his on-screen children, played by Silvia Dionicio and Andrew Russel, are set to return, the upcoming season will introduce a substantial roster of new talent. Plimpton, speaking to TV Insider, highlighted the significant shift in the ensemble, stating, "other than Mark and Mark's two children... the cast is completely different this year." She lauded the new additions as "extraordinary actors" and described the season's narrative as "rich and complicated and complex," suggesting a deep and intricate storyline.
Among the high-profile names joining the Task universe are Mahershala Ali, Harry Melling, Adam Nagaitis, Aminah Nieves, and Édgar Ramírez. Perhaps the most intriguing addition, however, is Julianne Nicholson, who will reprise her Emmy-winning role from Ingelsby's previous HBO hit, Mare of Easttown. This casting choice definitively establishes a shared cinematic universe between Task and Mare of Easttown, a treat for fans of Ingelsby's distinctive storytelling and atmospheric Pennsylvania-set crime dramas.
Plimpton confirmed the ongoing production, telling TV Insider, "I'm here now. I'm here in Philly. We're shooting it now. We're in the middle of it." While an official premiere date for Task Season 2 has not yet been announced, anticipation is building for a potential 2027 release. With its proven track record and a compelling blend of returning favorites and fresh faces, Task Season 2 is poised to continue HBO's legacy of premium crime thrillers.
