Fans of Sacha Baron Cohen's irreverent comedy will soon be able to stream his latest Ali G project, "Ali G: Who Iz I?", which is slated for release on Prime Video this Wednesday. This rapid transition to streaming follows a brief, two-day theatrical run that commenced last Friday, a strategic move by Amazon MGM Studios to create a sense of urgency and a unique big-screen experience before its digital premiere.
"Ali G: Who Iz I?" is a significant entry in Baron Cohen's career, as it marks his feature directorial debut. The film revisits the character of Ali G, the hip-hop journalist persona that first gained widespread recognition with the sketch comedy series Da Ali G Show, which premiered in the U.K. in 2000 and later aired on HBO. Baron Cohen himself took to social media on Monday, in character, to enthusiastically announce the forthcoming streaming release, playfully noting the endless viewing opportunities for fans.
While the film's plot centers on Ali G learning his girlfriend, played by Morgana Robinson, is eight months pregnant and his subsequent journey to America to prepare for fatherhood, the comedy style remains consistent with Baron Cohen's established oeuvre. Much like his acclaimed films Borat (2006) and Brüno (2009), the new Ali G feature employs a similar brand of hidden-camera, improvisational comedy, often placing unsuspecting individuals in situations designed to expose societal absurdities and fuel social commentary.
Ahead of its release, "Ali G: Who Iz I?" faced an unusual pre-release challenge when an AI-generated email campaign attempted to rally global theater chains to boycott the film. However, according to The Hollywood Reporter, no cinema chains supported the ban. Amazon MGM Studios did not publicly report any box office grosses from the film's limited theatrical outing, further emphasizing its primary destination as a streaming title.
Baron Cohen has recently addressed criticisms surrounding the Ali G character, explaining his comedic intent in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. He stated, "The core joke is that a white moron... is interviewing a white expert or high-status politician, and that white expert or high-status politician believes that this imbecile played by me is real, and that leads to comedy." He added that, in his belief, this approach "slightly undermines the power of the establishment."
Ali G first made his big-screen appearance in 2002's Ali G Indahouse, directed by Mark Mylod. Baron Cohen's other famous characters, Borat and Brüno, also originated on Da Ali G Show before headlining their own successful feature films. Notably, Borat Subsequent Moviefilm was released directly to Prime Video in October 2020, earning two Academy Award nominations, setting a precedent for this kind of streaming-focused release for Baron Cohen's work.
