The new animated series, Above Average, has secured Riley Voelkel, known for her roles in The Originals and Hightown, and Shiva Negar, recognized from American Assassin, for its voice cast. The news, initially reported by Deadline, highlights the show's unique premise and its progress through development.

Created by Andrew Deutsch and Cailin Walker-Bent of Canadian animation collective Red Pants Productions, alongside Josh Harris from JVH Media in the UK, Above Average is envisioned as an eight-part series. It's set in Metrocropolis, a bustling city where crime-fighting is a lucrative enterprise, and even saving lives requires official licensing. The series satirizes society's fixation on exceptionalism and the often-flawed pursuit of public image over actual public service.

The narrative centers on Gadget Kid, an ambitious teenager who, despite lacking any superpowers, is determined to make a significant impact. His journey leads him to SALT, a trio of washed-up, middle-aged superheroes who now operate out of a rundown laundromat, along with their accountant.

Riley Voelkel shared her excitement about the project's journey, stating, “I’ve had the opportunity to watch this project grow over time and seeing it evolve and reach this stage has been such a great experience.” She added, “I’m excited to be stepping into the world of voiceover and it’s been a blast to watch everything come to life.”

Shiva Negar echoed this sentiment, appreciating the show's distinct approach to heroics. “There’s something incredibly refreshing about a superhero comedy where the heroes are anything but super,” Negar commented, noting their relatable imperfections. She also expressed her enjoyment in the creative process, saying, “I’ve already had so much fun experimenting with different voices and personalities.” Negar also highlighted the opportunity to reunite with Josh Harris, with whom she previously worked on American Assassin.

Deutsch and Walker-Bent are slated to write and direct the series, overseeing both voice direction and casting. With animatics and character designs already in place, the production is moving steadily forward.
