The chilling narrative of a world plunged into war against sentient machines from Daniel H. Wilson's 2011 novel Robopocalypse is being developed into a television series, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter. Powerhouse creative duo Ron Howard and Akiva Goldsman are spearheading the ambitious project, with Howard slated to direct the pilot episode and Goldsman taking on the crucial roles of showrunner and pilot writer.

The novel, which explores humanity's desperate fight for survival against a global robot uprising controlled by a powerful artificial intelligence, feels particularly timely amidst growing societal discussions and anxieties surrounding AI. Its central premise, as described in the logline, details a future where "the dazzling technology that runs our world turns against us," forcing humanity to unite against annihilation.

This isn't the first time Robopocalypse has captured Hollywood's attention. The book famously attracted Steven Spielberg, who optioned it even before its publication with intentions to direct. Screenwriter Drew Goddard penned an early draft, and A-list stars like Anne Hathaway and Chris Hemsworth were at one point attached. However, Spielberg ultimately postponed the film indefinitely in 2014. Director Michael Bay later took the reins in 2018 for another cinematic attempt, but that version also never materialized. Now, Spielberg's Amblin Entertainment is involved as an executive producer on the series, bringing the story full circle.

For Howard and Goldsman, this collaboration marks a reunion of formidable creative talents. Their shared history includes the critically acclaimed film A Beautiful Mind, which earned Howard an Oscar for Best Director and Best Picture, and Goldsman an Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay. They also found massive commercial success with The Da Vinci Code, the 2006 adaptation of Dan Brown's novel, which grossed over $760 million worldwide.

Howard expressed his enthusiasm for the project, noting the story's blend of action and profound themes. “*Robopocalypse* has all the scale and suspense of a major action story, but what drew me to it are the thought-provoking themes and humanity at its center,” Howard stated. He added, “Daniel created a future that feels both startling and increasingly plausible, with characters who must figure out what connects us when the technology we rely on turns against us.” Howard also highlighted his excitement to work with Goldsman again, calling it the "right story to bring us back together."

The series is being developed by Imagine Entertainment and Weed Road, with Brian Grazer and Jeb Brody representing Imagine, and Greg Lessans and Rachel Wizenberg from Weed Pictures joining Goldsman and Howard in leading the development. While the creative team is firmly in place, the series is currently in development without a network or streaming platform attached.
