Veteran Star Trek actor Robert Picardo, known for his role as The Doctor in Star Trek: Voyager, recently shared his insights into the upcoming second season of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, a series that was canceled by Paramount+ just two months after its January 2026 premiere.

During an interview with TrekMovie at the New York City premiere of The Sixty-Year Mission, Picardo expressed significant optimism for the show's final run. Despite its cancellation, he stated he heard "season 2 is even better" from producers, adding that the footage he's seen during ADR work "looks spectacular."

Starfleet Academy was originally envisioned for at least four seasons but faced an abrupt end, though its second season had already completed production. Picardo lamented this sudden halt, describing the show as being "killed in the cradle." He drew parallels to previous Star Trek series, which historically often took until their third season to truly find their stride and gain critical acceptance.

Beyond streaming metrics, Picardo speculated on deeper cultural currents influencing the show's fate. He suggested that "Star Trek’s core values are now out of fashion temporarily," referencing a "present political moment" where diversity and inclusion, central tenets of Gene Roddenberry's original vision, are perceived to be under attack. This sentiment echoes the online backlash and "woke" accusations that targeted the series, despite Star Trek veterans consistently arguing that the franchise has always been inherently progressive.

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy ultimately marked the end of executive producer Alex Kurtzman's extensive Star Trek series slate at Paramount+. Its cancellation, alongside other projects, came as Skydance acquired Paramount+, signaling a new direction for the iconic franchise. Skydance reportedly plans to reboot Star Trek with new movies and TV series that will deliberately move away from the existing 60 years of legacy canon, aiming to attract a wider audience with a fresh narrative approach.

For fans of Starfleet Academy, the second and final season, set to debut in March 2027, promises an engaging conclusion. It will delve deeper into the cadets' outer space missions, challenging their career and life choices, and will feature notable guest stars including Bill Nighy and Rosemarie DeWitt. Audiences will soon be able to judge for themselves if the season lives up to Picardo's high praise.
