According to data reported by Variety, 'Resident Evil' continued its strong performance across mainland China, pulling in RMB28.5 million (approximately $4.3 million) during the October 30–November 1 weekend. Since its release during the Golden Week corridor on October 5, the video game adaptation has amassed an impressive cumulative total of $71.3 million, solidifying its hold on the market.
Making waves for its long-delayed arrival, Lionsgate's 2014 action thriller 'John Wick' finally premiered in China, securing the third spot with a $2.3 million opening weekend. The film's journey to Chinese cinemas has been fraught with challenges. Originally deemed too violent by regulators in 2015, its release was initially rejected. Further complications arose when star Keanu Reeves participated in a 2022 Tibet House U.S. benefit concert, leading to his work being pulled from Chinese streaming platforms. Despite these hurdles, the original film has now been released, though its sequels, 'John Wick: Chapter 2' and 'Chapter 3,' have yet to see a Chinese debut. Meanwhile, 'John Wick: Chapter 4' and the spinoff 'Ballerina' are reportedly slated for release in Chinese cinemas in 2025.
Rounding out the top five, New Classics Pictures’ crime procedural drama 'Traces of Justice' held strong in second place, adding $3.9 million in its fifth weekend. The period investigation epic, directed by Chen Sicheng, has now reached a cumulative gross of $98.5 million. Beijing Joy Fun Pictures’ family comedy 'Mr. & Mrs. Pardon' moved to fourth, taking $2 million over the weekend to bring its total to $59 million. Finally, Dirty Monkeys’ war comedy-drama 'Once Upon a Time in the Middle East' secured the fifth spot in its twelfth weekend, collecting $900,000 and pushing its cumulative total to a substantial $356.9 million.
Overall, the mainland China box office experienced a quieter period, with the total weekend gross sliding to $18.2 million. The year-to-date box office stands at $4.73 billion, marking a 29.0% decline compared to the same period last year, reflecting a post-holiday fall corridor for the market.
