Curry Barker, the director behind the surprise box office sensation Obsession, has quickly established himself as a filmmaker to watch. Obsession, made on a modest budget of $750,000 to $1 million, raked in an astounding $263 million domestically and $525 million worldwide, signaling the emergence of both Barker and its star, Inde Navarrette.
Despite his burgeoning success, Barker recently shared with Variety at the Time100 Next 2026 gala that he has already reached out to Nathan Fielder, the acclaimed actor, producer, and director known for his unconventional and thought-provoking work. Barker's inspiration came after seeing Fielder's film, You Can See Everything, a project co-directed with Lance Oppenheim and produced by A24, which focuses on the story of Elizabeth Holmes.
"I found it absolutely brilliant and completely insane... It lasted three hours, and I wished it had lasted longer. That's rare," Barker told Variety, expressing his deep admiration. He added, "I'm simply a huge admirer of [Nathan Fielder's] work." The film, which cost around $7 million to produce, has become a phenomenon in the United States, earning over $64 million since its October 16 release.
Nathan Fielder is no stranger to critical acclaim, having previously created the innovative HBO series The Rehearsal and Showtime's The Curse. His unique storytelling approach has clearly resonated with Barker, who is eager to explore a potential partnership.
Barker's own schedule is rapidly filling up. Following Obsession, he is set to direct Anything But Ghosts for Blumhouse, a story about two fake paranormal experts encountering a genuine supernatural entity. He will also helm the next installment of the iconic Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchise, produced and distributed by A24. With both directors boasting recent successes and distinct styles, a collaboration between Curry Barker and Nathan Fielder could undoubtedly lead to something truly original and compelling for audiences.
