Movie maestro Quentin Tarantino is venturing into new territory, bringing his distinctive flair to the London stage with 'The Popinjay Cavalier.' The play is scheduled to officially open on March 18, 2027, with preview performances kicking off on February 23. Tickets for the limited run, which concludes on June 13, will go on sale starting this Monday, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter.

This theatrical endeavor, produced by Sony Pictures Entertainment and Sonia Friedman Productions, is generating considerable buzz, not least because it marks Tarantino's first foray into directing for the West End. The celebrated director expressed his enthusiasm, stating, "I’m keen with anticipation to give the West End a great night out."

Adding to the excitement, Sacha Baron Cohen, known for his iconic comedic characters like Borat and Ali G, will take on the lead role. This will also be Baron Cohen's inaugural appearance on the West End stage. His casting came with typical Baron Cohen panache, as he recounted his immediate acceptance of the role: "I said yes before he even got to say his first ‘motherfucker.’ When the best director in the world calls, you don’t ask questions. I am beyond delighted that we will be losing our West End virginity together. I have made him promise not to be gentle."

'The Popinjay Cavalier' is described as a "swash-buckling, rambunctious comedy of deception and disguise." Set in 1830s Europe, the play draws inspiration from the grand swashbuckling epics of both stage and screen, as well as classic Hollywood's swashbuckler genre, including the works of George Bruce, Ernst Vajda, and Jesse Lasky Jr. Audiences can expect a sweeping celebration of theatre's heightened romance, infused with Tarantino's signature style and unmistakable wit.

Behind the scenes, Tarantino has assembled a formidable creative team. Scenic and costume design will be handled by Tom Pye, with Natasha Chivers overseeing lighting. Ian Dickinson is on board for sound design, while Philip d’Orleans will direct the fight sequences, supported by action co-ordinator Sam Lyon-Behan. Music for the production will be composed by Tim Phillips, with casting by Jim Carnahan, CSA, and Jack Bradfield serving as associate director. Further casting announcements are expected in the coming months.
