A short teaser has been unveiled to mark the start of filming for the new "Prison Break" series, which will not feature the actors from the original program.

Great news for Prison Break fans: the series is returning. But no, it's not the long-awaited Season 6, which still has an uncertain future. A cult hit since its debut in the early 2000s, the series is now turning its attention to a whole new generation of viewers with a reboot, the filming of which has just begun.

A Brand New Escape Story

Prison Break: Black Creek First Look

The series, titled Prison Break: Black Creek, stars Emily Browning as a former military operative who secures a transfer to a high-security prison where the man she loves is incarcerated. Unjustly accused of a crime he didn't commit, he has no choice but to escape to avoid the death penalty and hopefully prove his innocence.

This spin-off is not a continuation of the original series. In fact, iconic Prison Break characters, including the two protagonists Michael Scofield (Wentworth Miller) and Lincoln Burrows (Dominic Purcell), are not expected to appear in the program.

Screenwriter Elgin James (Mayans M.C.) will serve as the series' showrunner. The announcement of its filming start suggests a potential release in the second half of 2027 on Hulu in the United States and Disney+ in France. Very cryptic first images were revealed in a short 20-second teaser, offering only a brief glimpse of the program.

Prison Break: Is There Still Hope for Season 6?

Aired between 2005 and 2009, then brought back to screens in 2017 for a fifth (and to date, final) season, Prison Break is undoubtedly one of the most popular series of the early 2000s. Its popularity is explained by both its concept (a man gets himself imprisoned to help his brother escape) and the quality of its cast.

As for Season 6, it still doesn't seem to be on the cards. However, a ratings success for the reboot would undoubtedly rekindle studio interest, especially since the two original series stars appear willing to reprise their roles in the universe that made them famous to the general public.

All 5 seasons of Prison Break are currently available on Disney+.
