Peter Jackson Confirms 'Tintin 2' Will Be His Next Directorial Feature

After years of speculation and delays, acclaimed filmmaker Peter Jackson has definitively stated that the long-awaited sequel to The Adventures of Tintin will be his next directorial project. This categorical announcement, made at the Sitges Film F...

The journey to a second Tintin film has been a protracted one, dating back to an initial agreement between Jackson and Steven Spielberg. The plan was for Spielberg to direct the first film, 2011's The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn, with Jackson producing. The roles would then reverse for the sequel, placing Jackson in the director's chair.

However, Jackson's commitment to The Hobbit trilogy immediately after Tintin's release consumed much of his time. Following The Hobbit, and particularly after the passing of his long-time collaborator and cinematographer Andrew Lesnie in 2015, Jackson shifted his focus away from fiction, dedicating himself to acclaimed documentaries such as 2018's They Shall Not Grow Old and 2022's The Beatles: Get Back.

Now, over a decade later, Jackson is making a definitive return to fictional filmmaking. While he has been active as a producer on upcoming Lord of the Rings projects, including The Hunt for Gollum, which is currently nearing the end of its principal photography under director Andy Serkis, Tintin 2 is set to be his first fiction feature as a director in 12 years.

During his appearance at the Sitges Festival, where he received an honorary award, Jackson provided a clear update on his slate, as reported by ScreenRant. He mentioned ongoing work on another Lord of the Rings film, The Shadow of the Past, which is in the writing phase, and confirmed the near completion of The Hunt for Gollum filming. Crucially, he added: "And we have also written a script for Tintin 2, the second Tintin film. That will be the next film I make."

This statement stands out as the most concrete confirmation from Jackson to date, following earlier, more cautious remarks about the sequel's likelihood. Previous comments, including those at the Cannes Film Festival and in an interview with Gold Derby, hinted at Tintin 2 being his "probably" next film, but this recent declaration removes all doubt. The news, initially reported by EcranLarge, suggests that the script is complete and Jackson is ready to move forward. With The Hunt for Gollum already slated for a December 2027 release, the timeline for Tintin 2 remains to be seen, but its place as Jackson's immediate directorial priority is now secure.
