Gabriele Salvatores, the celebrated Italian filmmaker known for his Oscar-winning drama 'Mediterraneo,' is set to explore the intricate and often brutal world of chess in his latest project. 'The Lüneburg Variation' will feature a stellar European cast, including Germany's Sebastian Koch, star of the Oscar-winning 'The Lives of Others,' and Italy's Toni Servillo, celebrated for his lead role in the Oscar-winning 'The Great Beauty.'

The film adapts Paolo Maurensig's acclaimed novel of the same name, a book that has captivated readers in 25 languages. The story delves into a compelling revenge plot orchestrated through the strategic game of chess, sparked by the mysterious suicide of a wealthy Munich businessman. Salvatores expressed his enthusiasm for tackling such a unique subject, acknowledging the inherent paradox of adapting it for the screen.

"Chess! The most violent sport in existence and, perhaps, the least cinematic. It’s a great challenge, and one I was happy to take on," Salvatores stated. He further added his intent to immerse audiences in "the violent, magical, esoteric and mysterious dimension of chess, that is, instead, truly cinematic!"

Filming for 'The Lüneburg Variation' has already begun in Trieste, with a planned nine-week shooting schedule that will also include locations in Rome. The production is a collaborative effort led by Lotus Production, a Leone Film Group company, alongside RAI Cinema, in association with Vice Pictures, Indiana, and MDE. Italian distribution will be handled by RAI Cinema’s 01 Distribution, while RAI Cinema International Distribution will manage international sales.

The cast also features rising talents such as German actor Damian Hardung ('Maxton Hall'), South Tyrolean actor Thomas Prenn ('A Hidden Life'), and Italy's Eduardo Scarpetta ('My Brilliant Friend'). Behind the scenes, the creative team includes Diego Indraccolo as director of photography, Rita Rabassini as production designer, Patrizia Chericoni overseeing costumes, and Federico De Robertis composing the score.

Raffaella Leone of Lotus Production voiced her excitement about the collaboration, praising Salvatores' distinctive storytelling. "We are very happy to be working with Gabriele Salvatores, a filmmaker and director we have always loved for the mastery with which he takes you by the hand and transports you into his world, making you fall in love with cinema all over again — real cinema, great cinema with a capital C," she remarked, highlighting the anticipation surrounding this intriguing noir adaptation.
