For the first time since "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" opened on July 31, Universal and Christopher Nolan’s "The Odyssey" can celebrate its No. 1 spot at the global weekend box office. "Odyssey" pulled in a robust $45.96 million worldwide, edging out "Spider-Man: Brand New Day," which took $44.1 million in its sixth frame. This weekend's results highlight a unique rivalry, with one Tom Holland-Zendaya movie outperforming another.
"The Odyssey" has been on an incredible journey, now in its eighth weekend. It recently became the 17th movie to cross the $1 billion mark at the international box office. With a running global cume of $1.627 billion (including $584.7 million from domestic receipts), the Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, and Tom Holland ensemble is closing in on "Jurassic World’s" $1.67 billion worldwide total to become Universal's highest-grossing film ever.
This mini-triumph for "Odyssey" was boosted by Japan previews on 62 IMAX screens, which generated $755,000. These IMAX-exclusive runs have seen sell-outs, mirroring its success in the U.S., before the film goes wide in Japan on September 11. Domestically, "Odyssey" posted an eighth 3-day weekend of $13 million, complemented by an additional $32.9 million from 84 foreign territories.
IMAX continues to be a major driver, contributing $22.2 million to "Odyssey's" global ticket sales (or $27.2 million over the 4-day period). This makes "Odyssey" the large-format exhibitor’s highest-grossing movie of all time, now standing at $486 million from IMAX screens alone. Of the weekend’s IMAX take, $16.4 million came from foreign markets, while North America delivered $6.2 million over three days ($7.7 million over four days).

Individual market highlights for "Odyssey" include a stellar fifth weekend in Korea, where it added $7.6 million (a mere 33% drop) for an $80 million cume. This makes it Universal’s biggest film ever in Korea and the fifth-biggest MPA title of all time, still holding the No. 1 spot. In China, "Odyssey" added a strong $5.6 million this weekend, ranking No. 3 behind two local holdovers, pushing its total to $98.4 million and making it the second-biggest Nolan film there, behind "Interstellar."
Other strong performances include Germany with $2.1 million (down 23%) for a $59.3 million cume, and the UK & Ireland, which saw an excellent 38% hold in its eighth weekend for a No. 2 rank and $2 million, bringing its running total to $111.2 million. Nolan’s best film ever in the UK is set to break into the country’s top 10 best of all time, surpassing "Star Wars: The Last Jedi" and "Top Gun Maverick." In France, "Odyssey" was No. 3 with $1.6 million, nearing an $86 million total, making it the fourth biggest Hollywood film and Universal’s biggest ever, despite the end of school holidays impacting cinema-going. Australia delivered the best hold of any title, down just 8%, boosted by a National Cinema Day. The weekend result was $1.5 million, reaching $44.3 million, surpassing "Avengers: Infinity War" and becoming the No. 11 film of all time, already Universal’s biggest. Italy saw "Odyssey" at No. 2 with $1 million, representing 19% of the market’s business, for a cume of $64.1 million, making it the second biggest Hollywood film of all time and Universal’s biggest ever there.
Meanwhile, "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" continues its phenomenal run with a solid $2.4 billion at the global box office ($1.485 billion internationally, $917.8 million domestically through Sunday). This cements its position as the third-highest-grossing movie of all time, a rank it is likely to maintain behind "Avatar" ($2.9 billion) and "Avengers: Endgame" ($2.799 billion). Through Monday, the Web Slinger's domestic total is expected to reach $923 million. While the film is just $13.66 million shy of overtaking Disney/Lucasfilm’s "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" ($936.66 million) as the highest-grossing movie ever in North America, the global gap to best "Avengers: Endgame" remains too wide to cross.

"Spider-Man: Brand New Day" earned $18 million from its domestic 3-day weekend ($23 million over the 4-day Labor Day holiday) and an additional $26.1 million from 24,300 screens across 67 international markets. Its top-grossing territories include China ($230.8 million), UK ($130 million), Mexico ($89.8 million), France ($84.8 million), Brazil ($73 million), Germany ($66.5 million), South Korea ($64.3 million), India ($62 million), Australia ($59.2 million), Spain ($44.4 million), Italy ($43.6 million), Japan ($34.5 million), Argentina ($24.6 million), Philippines ($22.6 million), and Malaysia ($20.2 million).
For a fun breakdown of the rivalry, here’s where each film has claimed victory in key markets:
"Odyssey" has outperformed "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" in Korea, France, Italy, the Netherlands ($23.7 million for "Odyssey"), and Saudi Arabia ($20.1 million for "Odyssey").
Conversely, "Brand New Day" has bested "Odyssey" in China, Germany, the UK, Australia, India, Spain ($41.8 million for "Odyssey"), Mexico ($37.7 million for "Odyssey"), and Brazil ($23.9 million for "Odyssey").
