The literary world continues its embrace of Jane Austen, with Orgueil et Préjugés arriving on Netflix on December 3rd. Following recent adaptations like Georgia Oakley's Sense and Sensibility, expectations are naturally high for this latest rendition of Austen's most iconic novel. The series boasts a compelling cast, with Emma Corrin, known for roles in Deadpool & Wolverine and Nosferatu, stepping into the shoes of Elizabeth Bennet. Opposite her, Jack Lowden, whose credits include Dunkirk and Mary Queen of Scots, takes on the formidable role of Mr. Darcy. Adding further prestige to the ensemble are Olivia Colman and Rufus Sewell, portraying the often-fraught Mr. and Mrs. Bennet.
Yet, the initial trailer, as reviewed by Ecran Large, appears to play it safe. The French film publication noted a distinct lack of novelty, describing the preview as hitting "everything that is already most expected and rehashed in Jane Austen adaptations." Viewers are presented with the quintessential Regency-era imagery: pastel gowns, intimate sisterly moments, tense exchanges between Elizabeth and Darcy, and the familiar dynamic of a perpetually frantic mother and a weary father. This adherence to established tropes, Ecran Large suggests, leaves little room for aesthetic or narrative challenges, leading to an impression of a production that feels more like "a book filmed for schools" than an impactful new work.
Given the enduring legacy of prior adaptations—including the much-loved 1995 BBC mini-series with Jennifer Ehle and Colin Firth, and the 2005 film starring Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen—any new Pride and Prejudice faces the daunting task of carving out its own identity. The trailer, unfortunately, doesn't immediately reveal the unique chemistry between Corrin and Lowden, nor does it hint at any bold creative choices from writer Dolly Alderton and director Euros Lyn (Doctor Who, Heartstopper). While a single trailer cannot fully define a series, this first glimpse offers a rather subdued and overly traditional introduction.
As the December 3rd release date approaches, fans will be eager to see if Orgueil et Préjugés can transcend its seemingly conventional trailer and deliver a truly memorable and distinctive take on the timeless love story.
