The announcement marks a highly anticipated return for the hugely popular series, which originally aired on Channel 4 from 2008 to 2010. The sitcom famously followed the often-cringeworthy misadventures of suburban teenager Will McKenzie and his friends Simon Cooper, Neil Sutherland, and Jay Cartwright.

Adding to the excitement, Netflix also shared a first look at the cast back in character, more than 15 years after their last appearance. The brief clip shows the now-adult actors as their younger selves, piling into Simon Cooper's iconic, battered yellow 1996 Fiat Cinquecento Hawaii edition – a nostalgic nod to the car he received in the show's first series.

While specific plot details for the new film remain under wraps, it's safe to assume the narrative will continue the characters' journeys, which famously began as they navigated the trials of school life, friendship, and often-failed romantic endeavors at the fictitious Rudge Park Comprehensive.

Original series creators Damon Beesley and Iain Morris are returning to write and direct the film. Claire Jones will produce, alongside Banijay’s Patrick Holland and Fudge Park Production’s Mark Lesbirel. Beesley and Morris expressed their enthusiasm, stating, “It’s been super-fun hanging out with our friends again, and we’re going to work hard every week to ensure there are no problemos making this new film for humans.” They will also serve as executive producers, joined by Caroline Levy, Caroline Leddy, Phil Gilbert, Suzanne Knight, Tom Jordan, and Farhana Bhula for Film4.

The Inbetweeners garnered record-breaking ratings during its three-series run on Channel 4. Its success extended to the big screen with two Film4-backed movies, released in 2011 and 2014. The first film was a box office smash, debuting at No.1 and setting a record for the biggest opening weekend for a UK comedy at the time, a feat the sequel also achieved.

Rumours of The Inbetweeners' return first surfaced last October when Banijay UK CEO Patrick Holland hinted at “plotting more adventures” under a long-standing deal between Banijay UK and Fudge Park Productions.
