The Diablo franchise is set to celebrate its 30th anniversary in 2027. Since its foundational 1997 release, which defined the hack 'n' slash and gothic action-RPG genres, the series has sold over 100 million units across five major installments, including four numbered titles and the free-to-play Diablo Immortal.

To mark this significant milestone, Activision-Blizzard used the annual BlizzCon conference for several major announcements. Alongside the confirmation of Diablo V (not expected before spring 2029) and the upcoming Amazon class for Diablo IV, the company officially unveiled an animated Diablo series for Netflix. However, this isn't the first time such a project has been teased; a Netflix Diablo adaptation was initially announced back in 2018.

Blizzard's director, Johanna Faries, personally confirmed the new animated series from the BlizzCon main stage. Details remain scarce, with no showrunner, director, or writer currently attached to the project. The announcement was accompanied by a simple image combining the Diablo and Netflix logos on social media, along with the succinct statement: "We are thrilled to share that we are developing a new animated series for Diablo with Netflix."

For those who have followed Blizzard's journey, this announcement feels like a rerun. In 2018, rumors were rife about a partnership between Netflix and Blizzard to develop animated series for both Overwatch and Diablo. Andrew Cosby, known for his work on the disappointing 2019 Hellboy reboot, was reportedly attached to write. That initial venture, however, was ultimately scrapped, leaving no trace.

The big question now is which part of the sprawling Diablo mythology this new iteration will explore. With four canonical games, numerous expansions, comics published by Dark Horse and DC Comics, and a dozen novels, the future creative team will have an embarrassment of riches to choose from.

At its core, the Diablo saga tells the tale of Sanctuary, a world created as a refuge for humanity, caught in an eternal war between the Demons of the Burning Hells and the fanaticism of the High Heavens. Humans, caught in the middle, mostly try to survive by slaying anything that moves. Therefore, we can anticipate a series focused on unbridled action (hopefully with plenty of gore) or perhaps a narrative tracing the odyssey of Deckard Cain, an iconic figure of the franchise (which could easily span at least 10 seasons).

As of now, the Diablo series on Netflix has no announced release window.
