The Diablo saga, a cornerstone of modern video game history since its 1997 creation by Blizzard Entertainment, is officially getting a Netflix animated series. Known for its dark, demonic medieval-fantasy setting, the universe of Diablo has long held cinematic potential, often likened to a "Game of Thrones" in its scope and atmosphere. Netflix is now set to bring this beloved franchise to life on screen.

The news broke during BlizzCon 2026, Blizzard's annual fan event, with Blizzard President Johanna Faries making the official announcement. "We are thrilled to announce that we are currently developing a new animated series dedicated to Diablo in collaboration with Netflix," Faries stated. Expressing her personal excitement, she added, "As a huge fan of Diablo and a lover of Sanctuary's dark and captivating atmosphere, I am very much looking forward to seeing this project come to life."

Fan enthusiasm, already high for the Diablo news, surged further when Faries hinted at a broader strategy for adaptations. She revealed that the Diablo series is "just the beginning," confirming that other major Blizzard franchises are also in discussions for Netflix projects. "To our Overwatch community, to our Warcraft community, and who knows — perhaps even some of our other universes, just know that exciting discussions are underway," Faries teased, while keeping specifics under wraps for now. "Although I begged and pleaded to be able to tell you more, I cannot yet lift the veil. I promise that, as soon as possible, we will communicate more details."

The move draws parallels to the massive success of Netflix's 2021 animated series Arcane, based on Riot Games' League of Legends universe, which garnered significant critical acclaim and viewership. While Arcane benefited from creative freedom due to League of Legends' less narrative-driven source material, Diablo's rich and established lore might present different challenges and opportunities for its adaptation. Regardless, Netflix appears committed to replicating the triumph of Arcane with its new Blizzard collaborations.
