A recent report from IndieWire has revealed a groundbreaking collaboration that will see Meta, the parent company of Facebook, venturing directly into Hollywood film production. The company is partnering with Lionsgate to convert the upcoming 'Hunger Games' prequel, 'The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping,' into 3D for its theatrical release on November 20.
This isn't just about a standard 3D release; it's a strategic entry for Meta into premium entertainment content. The conversion process is being handled by Meta in conjunction with VFX powerhouse DNEG and its specialized 3D conversion branch, Stereo. Director Francis Lawrence, a veteran of the 'Hunger Games' franchise, is actively involved in adapting the film for this enhanced viewing format. This marks Meta's inaugural partnership of this kind with a major film studio, and according to sources, it won't be the last, with more Lionsgate titles slated for similar 3D treatment in the future.
Beyond the big screen, this collaboration extends into the burgeoning world of virtual reality. 'The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping' is also slated to be available on Meta's new VR Glasses, which are expected to launch in Spring 2027. Early demonstrations of these VR glasses suggest a design that prioritizes comfort and immersion, described as lighter and less obtrusive than many current VR headsets, resembling slightly larger sunglasses rather than bulky wraparound devices. The goal is to provide an immersive experience without the typical eye strain associated with extended VR use.
Meta's ambition is clear: to establish a strong foothold in the entertainment sector, directly competing with established players like YouTube and Google. Securing high-profile content such as a new 'Hunger Games' film is crucial to this strategy. The company is positioning its VR technology as a transformative medium for experiencing cinema at home.
Director Francis Lawrence expressed enthusiasm for the expanded creative possibilities. "From the beginning, we wanted 'The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping' to feel visceral and immersive, pulling audiences deep into Haymitch’s experience," Lawrence stated. "Adapting the film for 3D gave us another creative tool to bring audiences even closer to his perspective."
Lionsgate executives echoed this excitement. Jim Packer, Chief Revenue Officer at Lionsgate, commented, "As we continue to explore new ways for audiences to experience 'The Hunger Games,' we’re thrilled to partner with Meta on this first-of-its-kind collaboration." Sarah Malkin, Head of Entertainment for Meta’s Reality Labs, highlighted the synergy: "'The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping' is exactly the kind of cinematic experience that will be phenomenal in theaters, and also showcases what this technology makes possible at home."
'Sunrise on the Reaping' is the sixth installment in the beloved 'Hunger Games' saga and the second prequel, following 2023's 'The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes,' which earned $363 million worldwide. This new film delves into the early life of Haymitch Abernathy, with Joseph Zada portraying the teenage version of the character famously played by Woody Harrelson in the original series. The ensemble cast also features notable talents including McKenna Grace, Ralph Fiennes as President Snow, Jesse Plemons, Glenn Close, Kieran Culkin, Elle Fanning, Maya Hawke, Whitney Peak, Kelvin Harrison Jr., and Ben Wang.
