As negotiations continue between state attorneys general and Paramount regarding a potential settlement in the planned merger with Warner Bros. Discovery, actor Mark Ruffalo is making his stance unequivocally clear: the deal must not go through. Ruffalo, a four-time Oscar nominee, directly appealed to California Attorney General Rob Bonta, imploring him to resist any concessions.
Taking to social media, Ruffalo underscored the widespread opposition from within the film industry and beyond. "Don’t you dare @AGRobBonta, do not cave," he wrote, referencing the thousands of filmmakers and over 75,000 petition signers who have voiced their concerns. He emphasized that Bonta serves "the very people who will be hurt if you let this lousy deal filled with empty promises go forward."
In a significant escalation of his activism, Ruffalo also suggested a public demonstration. Hearing rumors that AG Bonta might be close to a settlement, Ruffalo issued a direct call to action for his Bay Area followers: "We can’t let him do that. Can you show up outside his AG office in Oakland tomorrow at 5pm to reject this backroom deal?" This move highlights the deep-seated apprehension among many in the industry about the implications of such a corporate consolidation.
The opposition isn't limited to Ruffalo alone. The "Block the Merger" initiative, which he supports, has garnered significant backing from a host of prominent figures, including Bryan Cranston, Jane Fonda, Denis Villeneuve, Sofia Coppola, and even national political leaders like Elizabeth Warren. This collective has previously released statements asserting that they "know a bad deal when we see one" and that the state AGs should "fully block the merger with no concessions."
This concerted effort by Hollywood creatives and public advocates comes as the March 2, 2027 federal antitrust trial date approaches. While leaks concerning the ongoing talks between the AGs—led by Bonta—and Paramount have surfaced, AG Bonta's office has remained silent on the matter, declining to comment on reports, as noted by Deadline.
The stakes are high for the entertainment landscape, with critics fearing that a merger could stifle competition, limit creative opportunities, and ultimately harm consumers. Ruffalo and his allies are determined to keep the pressure on, ensuring that the voices of those who believe this deal is detrimental are heard loud and clear.
