Kit Harington, celebrated for his iconic performance in Game of Thrones, recently broke his silence on joining the cast of HBO's ambitious Harry Potter series. The actor will take on the role of Gilderoy Lockhart, the narcissistic Defense Against the Dark Arts professor, in the show's second season, which will adapt Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. The character was famously played by Kenneth Branagh in the film series, with Nicholas Hoult initially cast for the HBO rendition before Harington stepped in.

Harington's decision comes at a time when the Harry Potter franchise faces scrutiny due to creator J.K. Rowling's well-documented transphobic views, which have alienated a significant portion of the fanbase. Despite this, Rowling remains closely involved with the HBO production, a detail confirmed by HBO boss Casey Bloys. This context has led many to question actors who choose to participate in the new adaptation.

For Harington, however, the draw appears to be deeply personal. Speaking on the Today show, as reported by Collider, he revealed a lifelong connection to the Wizarding World. "I was a fan when I was a kid, and then I rediscovered it as an adult, listening to it every night," Harington shared, emphasizing the books' significance to him. His enthusiasm extends to the series' potential to delve deeper into the source material than the films could. "With this, they can really explore the books at their fullest, and for a book nerd like me, that was a really great idea."

The upcoming Harry Potter series, spearheaded by showrunners Francesca Gardiner and Mark Mylod, is slated to premiere this Christmas on HBO. It's positioned as a major television event and a key driver for HBO subscriptions. While the original plan for an annual season release has been adjusted, Bloys assured fans that the wait between seasons won't stretch to two years.

Beyond the Wizarding World, Harington has a busy schedule. He was previously attached to a Game of Thrones spin-off centered on Jon Snow and is also starring in a new adaptation of A Tale of Two Cities, which airs this month on MGM+.
