The series will chronicle the remarkable journey of Bill Shankly, the Scottish football manager who revolutionized Liverpool FC between 1959 and 1974. His tenure saw the club rise from the Second Division to become a dominant force, securing multiple First Division Championships, FA Cups, and a UEFA Cup. Beyond the silverware, Shankly's legacy is deeply intertwined with the club's identity, including the adoption of "You'll Never Walk Alone" as its anthem.
The drama is poised to capture the vibrant spirit of 1960s Liverpool, exploring how Shankly's vision transformed a struggling team into a global powerhouse. Liverpool FC Chairman Tom Werner, a producer on the series alongside Box To Box Films, envisions the project as something akin to The Crown, focusing on deeper human connections. "It’s a story about family and relationships through the lens of a football club," Werner shared with Deadline, emphasizing the unique bond between the club and its supporters.
Jack Thorne, known for his work on Adolescence and a self-professed Liverpool fan, has already penned the first two episodes. The series aims to highlight Shankly's understanding that success extended beyond raw talent, hinging on forging a profound connection with the fanbase. Werner believes that even a single scene of 50,000 fans singing "You'll Never Walk Alone" would be profoundly moving.
Shankly's granddaughter, Karen Gill, author of The Real Bill Shankly, is also involved in the project, which is slated to film on location in Liverpool and at Anfield. While initial discussions with broadcasters and streamers are underway, Werner has hinted at ambitious plans for future seasons, potentially addressing the tragic Hillsborough disaster of 1989. The series promises a rich narrative exploring one of football's most influential figures and the cultural tapestry of a pivotal era for both the club and the city.
