As first reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Jamie Dornan has officially boarded 'Nostalgie' as an executive producer. The move sees the 'Belfast' and 'The Tourist' actor throw his support behind a film that has already secured an IFTA win for Best Short Film (Live Action) and a BAFTA nomination, making it Oscar-qualified and a potential nominee in the Best Live Action Short Film category.
'Nostalgie' is a darkly comic drama directed by Kathryn Ferguson, known for her Sinead O’Connor documentary 'Nothing Compares'. It centers on Drew Lord Haig, a washed-up 1980s pop star portrayed by Aidan Gillen ('Game of Thrones', 'The Wire'). The story, adapted from a short story by Belfast author Wendy Erskine, follows Haig as he's unexpectedly invited to perform at a centenary celebration in Belfast. He soon discovers that one of his forgotten songs has taken on an entirely new, unanticipated meaning, becoming an anthem that explores the complex relationship between artists and their audience, and the dilemma of artistic ownership.
For Belfast-born Dornan, joining the project was a natural fit, driven by his desire to champion local talent. "I’m always keeping my eyes and ears open for exciting productions being filmed back home," Dornan stated, adding that the opportunity to work alongside a largely Belfast-born team made it "an absolute no-brainer." He also lauded director Kathryn Ferguson's vision, noting that she "has captured the raw, visceral tribalism that exists within the complex social and political landscape of Northern Ireland, while telling a story that feels deeply human, relatable and universal."
The film boasts an impressive creative team beyond its stars. The screenplay was penned by Stacey Gregg ('Bad Sisters'), with original songs and a score contributed by BRIT Award-winning Bastille frontman Dan Smith. Cinematography is handled by two-time Oscar nominee Robbie Ryan, celebrated for his work on films like 'Poor Things' and 'The Favourite'. In addition to Gillen, the cast features Michael Smiley, Jessica Reynolds, Seamus O’Hara, and Sean Kearns.
Produced by Kath Mattock, Marie-Thérèse Mackle, and Marc Robinson, 'Nostalgie' was presented by Globe Originals in association with Hopefield and Film4, with Stille Productions and Tara Films serving as the production companies. With Dornan's backing, the short film is poised to gain even more traction as it navigates the competitive awards season, shining a spotlight on Northern Irish filmmaking talent.
