Idris Elba, known for his diverse roles and packed schedule, is adding another ambitious project to his growing filmography. He is taking on a dual role in Above the Below, serving as both a lead actor and co-director alongside Martin Owen (known for The Loneliest Boy in the World and Max Cloud). The film, a sci-fi survival thriller, recently unveiled its first images, as reported by Ecran Large, sourced from Collider, providing an intriguing look at its perilous setting.

The narrative of Above the Below plunges audiences into an extreme scenario: three astronauts miraculously survive a catastrophic fall from space, only to find themselves trapped in the immense pressure of the deep ocean. With their oxygen supplies rapidly diminishing, the crew faces an agonizing race against time, forced to make impossible choices about who will brave the treacherous journey to the surface and who might ultimately be left behind. Lionsgate provided a synopsis that further details this desperate struggle, highlighting the intense moral and physical challenges awaiting the characters.

Elba's commitment to creating an immersive and realistic experience for Above the Below is evident in his comments to Collider. He emphasized the hands-on approach taken during production, stating, "We built the spaceship ourselves, we immersed ourselves in the water and shot many underwater scenes. This film is characterized by a real realism that reinforces the feeling of claustrophobia and a suspense inherent in thrillers." He further expressed his excitement for audiences to embark on this unique voyage, adding, "I'm really looking forward to audiences joining us on this journey, from space to the ocean, and being entertained, captivated and... feeling that claustrophobic feeling!"

This isn't Elba's first foray into survival-themed narratives. He has previously faced extreme conditions in films like The Mountain Between Us, where he survived a plane crash in snowy mountains, and Beast, battling a lion in the savanna. His experience in these intense roles, including his turn as a mission captain in Prometheus, suggests he is well-equipped to convey the urgency and desperation required for Above the Below.

Joining Elba in this perilous adventure are Caitlin FitzGerald, recognized for her roles in Masters of Sex and Succession, and Hero Fiennes-Tiffin, known from the After saga and Young Sherlock. The film's lean 90-minute runtime is expected to contribute to its immersive and suspenseful nature. Above the Below is slated for a release in the United States in early December, with a French release date yet to be announced.
