Prior to this latest development, the network explored various ideas for standalone shows within the 'Fire Country' world. Early considerations included a series centered on Jared Padalecki's character, Camden, though updates on that front have been scarce. More successfully, the law enforcement aspect of Edgewater was explored with 'Sheriff Country,' which debuted last season following a successful backdoor pilot and has since garnered positive reception.
The newest expansion, first teased last season, will focus on the medical side of Edgewater, aiming to create an interconnected universe akin to NBC's 'One Chicago' franchise. While initial speculation suggested the spin-off might center on Natalie Zea's character, Camille, who began dating Manny (Kevin Alejandro) in 'Fire Country' Season 4, Max Thieriot — a co-creator and executive producer of 'Fire Country' — has confirmed that the new series will indeed launch this season, but with a different lead.
According to Deadline, the new medical drama, provisionally named 'Edge Med,' will introduce Dr. Hudson “Hud” Henshaw, portrayed by 'Schitt's Creek' alum Noah Reid. Dr. Henshaw is described as the charming, quick-witted, yet rough-around-the-edges Chief of Emergency Medicine at Edgewater Memorial. His backstory reveals a path divergent from his upbringing in Deadwater, where both his parents were convicted felons. Reid is set to make his debut in two upcoming episodes of 'Sheriff Country,' serving as a potential launchpad for his own series.
What Else Should You Expect From the 'Fire Country' Universe This Season?
Alongside the exciting spin-off news, the flagship 'Fire Country' series is undergoing notable changes. Eric Guggenheim takes over as the new showrunner for Season 5, which will comprise 13 episodes. Viewers will also meet new series regular CJ, played by Olivia Thirlby, in the season premiere, following a dramatic sinkhole incident on Main Street. Meanwhile, 'Sheriff Country' continues its narrative with Sheriff Mickey Fox grappling with a significant family revelation. Morena Baccarin's husband and 'Gotham' co-star, Ben McKenzie, will guest star as Sheriff Wade from a neighboring department in the season premiere. Fans can also look forward to a two-hour crossover event on November 6, where both shows will unite to track a prison break that escalates into a larger crisis.
