Hashmi's vision for Spine Drop Pictures is clear: to create commercially viable, high-concept genre pictures with budgets under $1 million. This strategy leverages his extensive experience crafting contained, impactful short films with limited resources. He emphasized to Deadline, "I've always looked at how can I tell an amazing story with less locations, fewer resources, but still make the concept so strong that it doesn't feel like I'm trying to make an expensive movie for cheap." This approach aims to maximize creative ambition while maintaining financial prudence in an evolving independent film market.

The initial slate reflects this ethos, each film penned and set to be directed by Hashmi. Off Plan is an interconnected horror anthology, weaving together six chilling stories set across Dubai over a single night. Its modular shooting design promises efficiency by allowing segments to be filmed independently, sharing crew and resources. Cinder is a gritty supernatural thriller expanding on Hashmi's award-winning 2020 short film Amber, transporting audiences to the remote, unforgiving mountain landscapes of the UAE. Rounding out the trio is Latching, described as a feminist possession-revenge horror film, unfolding over one harrowing night in Karachi, Pakistan, where it is currently in development. Hashmi, a longtime UAE resident, has Pakistani heritage, adding a personal dimension to this project.

Hashmi brings a wealth of experience to his new endeavor. Over a 15-year career, he has garnered a dedicated following for his ten contained, high-concept genre shorts, including titles like Wicken and Skipped, which collectively boast over three million views on YouTube and numerous festival screenings. Beyond his short film success, Hashmi recently co-wrote Emirati director Ali F. Mostafa’s highly anticipated sequel, City of Life Continuum. He is also attached to write and direct the English-language time-loop horror-thriller Fractal, starring Jason Flemyng and Gabriela Vargas, with production slated for 2027 in Serbia.

The launch of Spine Drop Pictures is not just about making films, but about fostering a sustainable independent film industry, particularly in emerging markets like the UAE. Hashmi pointed to the international success of low-budget, high-concept horror films such as Obsession, Undertone, and Good Boy as inspiration. He stated, "A sustainable film industry isn't built on getting one expensive film financed. It's built on making films that can find audiences, recover their investments and help finance the next one." This philosophy underpins the company's strategic focus on commercially viable projects with international appeal.

As Spine Drop Pictures moves forward with its inaugural features, the company is actively exploring opportunities for slate investment, international co-productions, and strategic financing and distribution partnerships, aiming to build a robust foundation for future productions.
