As reported by Deadline, the diverse selection showcases the breadth of European filmmaking, representing 40 different countries and featuring a blend of established masters and exciting emerging talents. Notably, 25 of the shortlisted films are directed or co-directed by women, highlighting a growing emphasis on gender representation within the industry.

The shortlist is divided into three main categories: fiction, documentary, and animation. The fiction category, boasting 45 titles, includes several films that have already garnered significant attention on the festival circuit and are considered strong contenders for the broader awards season. Among these are Fjord, the Palme d’Or winner at Cannes 2026, and Woman Unknown, which took home the Golden Lion at Venice. Other highly anticipated fiction films making the cut include La Bola Negra and Coward.

For documentary enthusiasts, 15 compelling films have been shortlisted, with NAZA and the French box office hit Whispers in the Woods standing out. The animation category also features strong contenders, including festival favorites like In Waves, Iron Boy, and Jim Queen.

The European Film Awards have strategically repositioned their ceremony to a January slot, a move that commenced with the 2026 ceremony. This timing is crucial, placing the event just after the Academy Awards' nomination voting concludes on January 15, 2027, and before the Oscar nominations are announced on January 21. The Golden Globes will also have wrapped up their 2027 ceremony by January 10. This carefully chosen date allows European filmmakers and their teams to attend the Athens celebration before potentially returning to Los Angeles to resume campaigning for Oscar consideration, should their films make the final shortlists.

Over 5,700 cinema professionals from approximately 50 European countries will cast their votes to determine the eventual nominees and winners. The nominations for categories such as best film, documentary, animation, director, actress, actor, screenwriter, and various technical awards, along with the Discovery – Prix Fipresci award, are scheduled to be announced on November 14, 2026, during the Thessaloniki International Film Festival.

The 38th ceremony, held earlier this year in Berlin, saw Joachim Trier's Norwegian drama Sentimental Value dominate, sweeping awards for best film, director, screenwriter (for Trier and Eskil Vogt), best actor (Stellan Skarsgård), best actress (Renate Reinsve), and best score (Hania Rani). The film later went on to win Best International Feature Film at the Oscars, underscoring the European Film Awards' growing influence as a predictor and launchpad for international cinematic success.
