Developed by Restoration Games in collaboration with Space Cowboys, 'The Lord of the Rings: The King's Gambit' is a modern reinterpretation of the revered 2000 board game, 'Star Wars: The Queen's Gambit.' Original designer Rob Daviau is at the helm of this new project, ensuring a faithful yet innovative adaptation.

Rather than merely reskinning its predecessor, 'The King's Gambit' overhauls its intricate, multi-front battle system to focus on the pivotal moments from 'The Return of the King.' Players will simultaneously manage four key conflicts from Tolkien's narrative:

  • The Riders of Rohan clashing with Sauron's forces on the Pelennor Fields.
  • Gondor's valiant defense of Minas Tirith.
  • Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli engaging the Haradrim at Pelargir.
  • Frodo and Sam's perilous final journey through Mordor towards Mount Doom.

Gameplay revolves around card-driven actions, allowing players to strategically allocate resources across these interconnected battlefields. The game supports 1–4 players and integrates elements of dice rolling, area influence, and team-based mechanics.

For dedicated collectors, Restoration Games will launch a limited deluxe edition via crowdfunding. This version promises premium components, including impressive three-dimensional models of Minas Tirith and Mordor that frame the playing area, alongside highly detailed character and army miniatures. A standard retail version will also be available, retaining the core gameplay and artwork but without the elaborate 3D terrain.

While the worldwide retail launch through Asmodee is confirmed for 2027, an exact date is still pending. Before then, Restoration Games is set to initiate a deluxe crowdfunding campaign this month, with Rob Daviau pinpointing September 22, 2026, as the Kickstarter's scheduled start date. Fans are encouraged to monitor the Kickstarter page for the latest updates on 'The Lord of the Rings: The King's Gambit's' official release.
