Directed by Sonja Orlewicz-Zakrzewska in her feature debut, 'Exotic' centers on a writer whose initial fascination with pole dancing transforms into a profound journey of self-realization. As she delves deeper into the art form, the vibrant community of dancers she encounters helps her confront her inner self and embrace her true identity. The film is lauded for its authentic portrayal, having been shot during a real-life Exo Stars Camp, featuring genuine participants and instructors.
The deal was brokered between Jessica Russo, COO of Productions and Acquisitions at VMI Worldwide and Vantage Media, and Daniel Vadocky, Head of Sales at Berlin-based Pluto Film, which is handling international sales and has already unveiled the film's first international trailer. Polish distribution will be handled by Gutek.
Jessica Russo highlighted the film's crucial message, especially in the current climate. "*Exotic* delivers a timely and empowering message about the importance of embracing who we truly are," Russo stated. She added that "the film celebrates female strength, confidence and self-expression, reminding us that empowerment often begins with courage."
Daniel Vadocky of Pluto Film expressed optimism about the early distribution deal. "We are very pleased to have secured a North American distribution deal ahead of the film’s world premiere," Vadocky said, adding that it serves as a strong indication of the film's international appeal and audience potential. He conveyed full confidence in Vantage/VMI's ability to successfully distribute the film across various platforms.
Filmmaker Sonja Orlewicz-Zakrzewska drew inspiration from her own experience, explaining her deep dive into exotic pole dance after discovering it. She was particularly captivated by "the clash of the fragile, intimate universes we carried within us around the camp," seeing it as an ideal setting for individuals to overcome fears and express themselves beyond daily constraints. A visual artist and photographer with a master's degree from the Łódź Film School, Orlewicz-Zakrzewska brings a unique perspective to her storytelling, having previously directed the short film Cross’n’Carry and worked as a cinematographer for Canal+.
The film stars Jaśmina Polak, Magdalena Koleśnik, and Monika Frajczyk, with Adam Suzin as Director of Photography, Tomasz Kajetan Naruszewicz as Editor, and Tymek Papior as Composer. 'Exotic' received support from the Polish Film Institute’s microbudget scheme, designed to foster first-time directors. Its premiere at the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival is scheduled between November 6 and 22, marking a significant debut for this empowering narrative.
