Moviegoers eager to witness the dramatic life of Jimmy Stewart will get their chance sooner than anticipated. The biopic, simply titled Jimmy, which delves into the iconic actor's courageous decision to put his booming career on hold to serve as a combat pilot in World War II, will now debut in limited theaters across the U.S. on Sunday, November 1. This exclusive early release, as reported by Collider, precedes its official nationwide opening on November 6.
Directed by Aaron Burns, Jimmy explores Stewart's transformative journey from an Oscar-winning Hollywood star to a U.S. Army Air Corps commander, and his eventual return to cinema, famously culminating in his role as George Bailey in It's a Wonderful Life. The film has already garnered significant attention, earning Best Feature at the Washington West Film Festival and the Audience Choice Award at the Heartland International Film Festival. Star KJ Apa, known for his role in Riverdale, has also received individual accolades, including the Spotlight Award at the Newport Beach Film Festival for his portrayal of Stewart.
Critics have praised Apa's performance, with Jenelle Riley stating, "KJ Apa doesn't just portray Jimmy Stewart — he channels him. A superb performance of a true hero." The film's distributors, Burns & Co. Entertainment and Fathom Entertainment, decided to accelerate the release due to the overwhelmingly positive reception and to honor the message of service and sacrifice embedded in the story. Jason Brenek, CEO of Fathom Entertainment, remarked on the decision: "Jimmy is a moving theatrical experience with a brilliant performance... The legend of Jimmy Stewart is one of patriotism, service, and sacrifice that is to be celebrated."
In a commendable initiative, the distributors partnered with Vet Tix to provide free screenings for veterans, first responders, and their families, with over $1 million in tickets already distributed nationwide. The film also features a notable ensemble cast including Kara Killmer, Neal McDonough, Max Casella, Jason Alexander, Christopher McDonald, and Sarah Drew, with Justin Strawhand penning the script.
Beyond the wartime narrative, Jimmy offers a glimpse into the making of It's a Wonderful Life, depicting Stewart's initial hesitations and eventual embrace of the role that would define his legacy as a Christmas classic. Tickets for the early bird screenings on November 1 and the wider release on November 6 are currently available.
