For years, Christopher McQuarrie has been synonymous with the high-octane Mission: Impossible franchise, directing Tom Cruise in the last four installments, including Rogue Nation, Fallout, and the two-part Dead Reckoning. Now, with the Mission: Impossible series reportedly concluding, McQuarrie is expanding his directorial horizons, and his next major project will see him team up with screen legend Denzel Washington.
The news, initially reported by Deadline, reveals that Washington will headline a new thriller for Amazon MGM Studios and United Artists. This collaboration represents a fresh direction for McQuarrie, as it's his first film since 2012 not to feature Tom Cruise in a leading role. Beyond this thriller, McQuarrie is also attached to other ambitious projects, including a film adaptation of the Battlefield video game starring Michael B. Jordan and the much-anticipated return of Arnold Schwarzenegger as Conan.
For Denzel Washington, this new role comes after a high-profile historical film, Hannibal for Netflix, was recently shelved due to budget disagreements between producers and the streaming platform. The cancellation freed up the actor's schedule for this new venture, which already has a North American release date of October 1, 2027.
The currently untitled thriller is penned by Scott Barkan and Gregg Zehentner, known for their work on projects like Into the Dark. The plot centers on a former police inspector serving a life sentence who receives a terminal brain cancer diagnosis, giving him only six months to live. Granted a compassionate medical release, he returns home to reconnect with his estranged daughter and meet a grandson he never knew existed. Like many ex-convicts, his primary desire is redemption and a chance to leave his dark past behind, but escaping his history proves to be far from simple.
While further casting details remain under wraps, production is reportedly set to commence in November in New Jersey, according to The Hollywood Reporter. In the interim, fans can look forward to seeing Washington alongside Robert Pattinson and Daisy Edgar-Jones in The Take (formerly Here Comes the Flood), which is expected to arrive on Netflix next year. This collaboration with McQuarrie promises to be another compelling addition to both Washington's illustrious career and McQuarrie's diverse filmography, offering a fresh take on the thriller genre.
