In a move set to reassure fans, DC Studios co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran have received a full endorsement of their multi-year creative roadmap from David Ellison, the CEO of Skydance, the new entity formed by the merger of Paramount and Warner. This crucial approval, detailed by Ecran Large, confirms that the ambitious slate, including future installments like Superman 2: Man of Tomorrow, will proceed as planned, backed by an injection of new resources.
The news arrives after a period of considerable uncertainty for the DC franchise. Following the tumultuous end of the previous DCEU, marred by underperforming films like The Flash and Aquaman: The Lost Kingdom, Gunn and Safran were brought in to orchestrate a complete reboot, launching the new DCU under Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters. Initial projects included the animated series Creature Commandos, the upcoming Superman film (starring David Corenswet), and the second season of Peacemaker.
However, recent months saw a wave of cancellations, including a Supergirl film and several TV series like Booster Gold and Waller, sparking concerns that the new DCU might face similar instability or even be derailed by the large-scale corporate merger. The fear that key projects, perhaps even Superman 2, could be sacrificed for financial maneuvers, akin to the infamous Batgirl film cancellation, loomed large.
Ellison's decision to retain Gunn and Safran, and more importantly, to greenlight their extensive plans, signals a strong commitment to the DCU's future. Peter Safran expressed enthusiasm for the development, telling The Hollywood Reporter that the duo now has the opportunity "to do it with even more resources at our disposal, with an even greater scope, it's really exciting for us." He elaborated on the depth of their presentation to Ellison, stating, "We discussed the direction we envision for the next few years... and he seems to adhere to this vision."
James Gunn echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the transparency of their discussions with the new leadership. "We told David everything a long time ago, and we went over the basic plan... what would happen from Man of Tomorrow," Gunn revealed, confirming that the entire trajectory of the DCU, starting from the upcoming Superman film and extending to Superman 2: Man of Tomorrow, has been laid out and approved. This confirmation for Superman 2, set for a firm release date of July 7, 2027, provides a vital anchor for the burgeoning universe.
Beyond Superman 2, the DCU slate is packed with diverse projects. Confirmed upcoming titles include the series Lanterns (which recently concluded its first season on HBO Max), the horror film Clayface (scheduled for October 21, 2026), and the peculiar series The People vs. Gorilla Grodd. Fans can also anticipate the return of the Caped Crusader and Robin in The Brave and the Bold, alongside films for Swamp Thing and Wonder Woman.
Whispers from behind the scenes also suggest the development of a Teen Titans feature film and a mercenary-focused movie titled Savage Hunters, featuring iconic Batman villains Bane and Deathstroke. A second season of Lanterns is also highly probable, indicating a robust and expansive future for the DC Universe under its new corporate umbrella.
