The moniker 'Mr. Irrelevant' gained widespread recognition in recent years thanks to Brock Purdy's meteoric rise with the San Francisco 49ers. However, long before Purdy, another athlete carried the same label and left an indelible mark: John Tuggle.
Paramount has now unveiled the first trailer for 'Mr. Irrelevant,' a biopic that casts David Corenswet as Tuggle. In 1983, Tuggle was the final selection in the NFL Draft, picked by the New York Giants under legendary coach Bill Parcells. Despite the odds, Tuggle's sheer toughness, grit, determination, and infectious optimism earned him a spot on the roster.
The inspiring narrative takes a turn in 1984 when Tuggle was diagnosed with cancer, ending his playing career. Remarkably, the Giants kept him on the roster to ensure he received his salary and medical coverage. The film, and its newly released trailer, promise a powerful story of perseverance, anchored by Corenswet's charismatic performance.
Reports from June indicated 'Mr. Irrelevant' achieved exceptionally high test screening scores, particularly among women over 35, a rare feat for any film. Consequently, Paramount is positioning the movie for a holiday release on Christmas Day, hoping for a seasonal hit.
Jonathan Levine, who Paramount recently tapped to direct a 'Days of Thunder' sequel, helms 'Mr. Irrelevant' from a screenplay by Nick Santora, known for 'Reacher.' The cast also features Isabel May and Michael Shannon, who appears to deliver a compelling portrayal of Coach Parcells. The trailer notably includes a scene where Tuggle interrupts Parcells during a media session, prompting the coach to chastise both Tuggle and the press for even considering the last draft pick as a potential team member.
'Mr. Irrelevant' is a Skydance Sports production, distributed by Paramount. This film marks the inaugural theatrical release from a partnership between Skydance Sports and the NFL, a collaboration that also includes an Amazon documentary about Jason Kelce, a Netflix documentary focusing on Jerry Jones, and the Hallmark movie 'Holiday Touchdown: A Chiefs Love Story.'
'Mr. Irrelevant' is set to debut in theaters on December 25. The trailer is now available for viewing.
