Amazon MGM Studios' Verity, featuring Anne Hathaway, Dakota Johnson, and Josh Hartnett, has proven to be a significant success, marking the second-best opening for a film based on a Colleen Hoover novel. Its $62.5 million global haul places it just behind the 2024 hit It Ends With Us, which debuted with $95.6 million worldwide, according to a report from Deadline. Produced on a net budget of $40 million, Verity's strong performance further solidifies Amazon MGM Studios' presence in the female-centric content market.

The film's appeal wasn't limited to its core demographic. While its U.S. opening weekend saw 78% female attendance, Verity successfully drew in a broader audience internationally, including those not typically fans of literary adaptations. The Michael Showalter-directed thriller claimed the top spot in numerous overseas markets, including the UK ($4.5 million), Brazil ($3.8 million), and Australia ($3.1 million). Other notable No. 1 openings included Norway, Turkey, Ukraine—where it achieved the biggest opening for a Hoover book adaptation—Portugal, Hungary, Germany, and the Netherlands. The film also performed strongly in markets like France, Spain, and India, where it was only slightly behind It Ends With Us.

In stark contrast, Alejandro Iñárritu's Digger faced a challenging opening weekend. The political satire, boasting a substantial $160 million net production cost and starring Tom Cruise, managed only $20 million globally. This figure includes $12 million from international markets and a mere $8 million domestically, indicating a significant underperformance. The film's debut stands in sharp relief against its high budget and the pedigree of its director and lead actor.

Verity's success also outpaced other recent releases and previous Hoover adaptations. It surpassed the global opening of Warner Bros.' Practical Magic 2, which began with $46 million worldwide. Furthermore, Verity significantly outperformed earlier Hoover adaptations like Regretting You ($23.6 million worldwide) and Reminders of Him ($28.1 million worldwide) in their respective global launches. The film is set to open in additional territories, including Taiwan, South Korea, and Japan, in the coming weeks, suggesting its global box office run is far from over.
