Building on the global success of the original Upgraded, Amazon MGM Studios has greenlit a sequel, bringing back its lead actress and expanding her role behind the scenes. As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Camila Mendes will reprise her role as Ana and also serve as a producer through her company, Honor Role.

The first Upgraded introduced audiences to Ana, an ambitious art intern whose life takes an unexpected turn after a fortuitous first-class upgrade on a flight to London. The film, which also starred Archie Renaux and Marisa Tomei, premiered on Prime Video in February 2024 and quickly garnered a "Certified Fresh" rating on Rotten Tomatoes, solidifying its place as a charming addition to the rom-com genre.

For Upgraded 2, Becca Gleason is stepping into the director's chair. Gleason made her feature directorial debut with Summer '03 and has also worked as a consulting producer on Amazon MGM's popular series The Summer I Turned Pretty. The script for the sequel will be penned by Luke Roberts and Justin Matthews, who were also responsible for the original film's screenplay.

Mendes's involvement as a producer through Honor Role underscores her deepening relationship with Amazon MGM Studios, which has also seen her star in Música and the upcoming Masters of the Universe. Mendes co-founded Honor Role with Rachel Matthews with a mission to champion character-driven storytelling. Beyond Upgraded, Honor Role's slate includes this year's Idiotka, in which Mendes also co-stars.

Gulfstream Pictures, which financed the first film, returns to produce the sequel alongside Honor Role, Luber Roklin Entertainment, and Tempo Production. Mike Karz and Bill Bindley will produce for Gulfstream Pictures, while Mendes and Rachel Matthews represent Honor Role. Lena Roklin produces for Luber Roklin Entertainment, and Piers Tempest for Tempo Production.

Gulfstream Pictures has a robust partnership with Amazon MGM, with other collaborations including the forthcoming Honeymoon With Harry, starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Kevin Costner, and Goodbye Girl, featuring Kiernan Shipka and Cole Sprouse. This continued collaboration highlights the studio's commitment to delivering diverse content to its streaming audience.

With production kicking off soon in scenic Italy, fans can anticipate another charming romantic journey with Ana, as Mendes continues to expand her creative footprint in Hollywood.
